pop culture
Epic love stories and relationships as depicted in pop culture, though it rarely turns out like that in real life.
Dirty Underwear and Scarves from Elvis
My grandfather never told me how he came into possession of Elvis’ scarf. The pale blue scarf was in decent shape lying on the kitchen table next to a faded yellow advertisement of the 1975 New Year’s Eve show in Detroit, Michigan. Beside the scarf were two Hummel figures, a hiking boy and a girl sitting with an umbrella. Dan, my older brother, ate cereal against the counter with a smile on his face.

Picture This: Holy. Freakin'. Crap.
Picture this: Your 26, and just unlocked the front door to your apartment, step son in tow to make it inside the living room before you do. He pulls it off, his backpack being hurled into the couch that's on the other side of the room.

Lady Luck
Never has there been such a moment where country music sounds so damn bad. ‘Give me a break’ I think as I turn the volume down. I look back to the road and catch my reflection in the rear-view mirror. A clown-face stares back; a portrait of stupidity.

Bull in a China Shop
Let me start off by saying, I don't normally pay any attention to zodiac signs. Like... at all. It's not to say I hate people who are into astrology, or hate talking about it. I've just never been interested. Being something because you're born on a certain day doesn't make much sense to me. I have tried so very hard to understand it, and I can't.

What happened to the Little Black Book?
Years ago, I remember seeing on TV that a little black book was an expression alluding to a list of numbers of possible dates or people to hook up with. In our digital and technologically advanced age, I wonder if Match and Tinder have replaced the old-fashioned little black book. It left me wondering if anyone still had a little black book, listing the names of people to call when you need a date, for lonely nights or just for networking. I asked many friends from various backgrounds and ages and not a one ever had one or knew of someone that did. Did my group of friends just not have options or was the Little Black Book something just from the movies? Others explained the Little Black Book was sometimes just a list of contacts and not necessarily for dating purposes. This led me to wonder: Is our contact list in our phones the new little Black Book we pull out and scroll through? Who can we call? Who will answer? How many people have my name in their contact list? Am I a part of someone’s little black book?

Growing Up in Arlen
As someone who lives in the exact spot on the map that Arlen, Texas would sit in if it were a real town, no work of fiction creates a caricature of my culture as well as the grandfather of all adult cartoons, ‘King of the Hill’. Forget ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ and the rest of the cowboy shit; contrary to popular belief, anyone seen wearing a ten gallon hat and spurs in East Texas is a poser and a fraud. We don’t have to dodge tumbleweeds and herd cattle here, as we live in as much of a humid, green hellscape as those poor souls inhabiting the swamps of Florida and Louisiana- I even found a nine and a half foot alligator in a pond behind my house one time in highschool. This satirical depiction of the way of life of my people, and the nostalgia it brings because of all the times I watched it on the couch with my dad as a child, makes ‘King of the Hill’ the ultimate comfort show when I find myself having a bad day.

Don’t!
If ever you get the urge to participate in a 2000’s theme party, replete with faux-platinum grillz; if you want to “dip it low” and “get your eagle on”; if you want to lose yourself in the music, the moment, but you don’t know the names of the artists or the songs, don’t!

Social Pressure
I have been having some nagging thoughts lately. Our social climate has been shifting over the last year and where many things in our day to day have shifted, there are still a lot of widely believed social stigmas about businesses, gaming and most of all music.
