humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
Environmental Art
I would like to share an art project that I did over the summer of 2018. It is a paint by numbers and the subject of it is a landscape. Both these aspects of the painting add to what the project is actually about. The concept was a project just for myself. I decided to go around and pick up trash in my neighborhood. I would collect bags of trash. Normally they were ten-liter bags, but sometimes I would fill up twenty-five or forty-liter bags too, depending on if I was doing it with my friends or collecting in an area that had a lot of trash. For every bag that I filled, I would color one number in the painting. And so, each color in the painting represents a bag of trash collected and the world becoming one step closer to the beautiful landscape depicted in the painting. That was the premise of the piece.

They Say You Don't Know Where You're Going
Two years ago, my father was killed in a tree falling accident. He wasn't a logger or an arborist, just a stubborn senior that insisted on doing everything himself. He loved falling trees, but even with a system designed to keep him safe, he still met his demise by way of a widow maker in November of 2018.

5 Crucial Things 2020 Taught Us
Goodbye 2020 It was a bad year. I wouldn’t go as far as Time magazine and declare it “the worst year ever”, but it was definitely bad. Many people lost loved ones, many people had their lives rocked to their core. Anxiety and fear dominated. Loneliness and isolation became the new norm.

Foreign Deja Vu
You need to go to the store. Eggs Milk Bread Toilet paper When you get to the store, you can’t find a place to park. Everyone in Springfield is there. You patiently patrol until you find a spot in the very last row furthest from the entrance. You’re young, it’s okay if you must walk. You step through the automatic doors, and the greeter says hi. You say hi back and grab a cart. You wait in line to get a sanitizer wipe. You have never had to wait in line just to get a sanitizer wipe before. When you do get to the stand, you only take one. The greeter walks over, grabs your cart, and thanks you. She says people have been greedy. A corner of your mouth pulls up and you say it’s not a problem.

The Form of Generosity
I was going through philosopher Dr. Leonard Peikoff’s book The DIM Hypothesis: Why the Lights of the West Are Going Out (2012) this past week, and it just made me wonder about the Greeks, the Romans, and those who lived in the Middle Ages. In the book, Dr. Peikoff evaluates different periods in history according to literature, science, education and politics, but what were the people who lived during these periods really like? Were they hedonists, thirsty for thrills, without concern for anyone else, pursuing their own gratification? Or were they subdued, allowing themselves to be trampled on just so they could say they sacrificedm themselves in the name of altruism? The questions lead me to wonder about us, too. As I walk through the stores, looking at the winking lights, and see people tossing change into a kettle like a wishing well, I think who are we now?

You Are Not a Time Bomb
Dear Natalie, You are not a time bomb. Before you set your ambitious and comendable goals, I want to remind you of this: you are not going to detonate at the end of this year if you do not accomplish all of the goals, projects and things you think you should accomplish in order to be "successful." Success is not always what it seems.

Rebuilding the Castle
Dear Don, I'm glad you made it out of 2020, and it was rough, but now you have a chance to recover and rebuild to get better. It wasn't easy, we practically crawled to the finish line, but luckily, you kept fighting to get to the end. You had so many plans from the YouTube channel (subscribe to Good Time Geeks, everyone) to doing more throughout the year, like going to the gym and even trying to hang out with some more friends. I know you couldn't do a lot because of the pandemic, and you don't want to put your health at risk to do what you want to do. I know you want to do more this year, but I want you to be smart and be careful, but when you come back, I want you to tell me what you want to do this year.
