humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
A Tone of Regret
The roar of the waterfall crashing over the rocks was eerily soothing to the grieving tortured soul of a young man approaching the edge of the fullness of pain. Tony came here often at night to hear the water flow as the murky brown became pure white on its rocky descent to the bottom. He could even almost feel her presence embracing him with warmth as he would ponder the memories they shared and his epic failure to treasure those moments. He thought that they had an infinite amount of time, after all they were both in their twenties. It had been nearly a year since her passing, and yet the agony was still as raw as if it had just been yesterday.

She Should Be Kissed. Second Place in Teen Angst Playlist Challenge.
The students flock into the classroom, its walls and chalkboard coated in shocking shades of pink. A freckled, redhead slumps into her seat, an empty desk with a girl in it. She scoffs at herself for thinking elementary school was harsh with kids comparing decorated paper-plate card holders to see whose contained the most Valentines. Cheerleaders parade into the class to pass out carnations, and her head drops. Her eyes run along the black and white lines in her novel, eagerly gobbling each letter and word. Over a thousand pages to devour of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind. Not a usual choice for a teen in 1984, but she’s not a usual girl. Let the cool kids get the flowers. She’ll take a trip, any trip, out of the ordinary and into a world where she should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.

Sophia
“Bye, Buddy,” Sophia said as she kissed the top of the old dog’s head, “see you when I get home!” She grabbed her backpack from beside the door and checked to make sure her lunchbox was inside before swinging it over both her shoulders. “Bye, Buddy,” she said again as she backtracked to kiss the top Buddy’s head once more, “see you when I get home!”

Killing Time With Gratitude
Coming home for the holidays was always a bittersweet trip. Sweet; to visit old friends and eat all of your mother’s food. Bitter; to reopen wounds of something you had left behind. This year, Layla was only able to see her family for a few days. Having flown in two weeks before, she had been in compulsory quarantine due to the pandemic. Layla didn’t want to be away from ‘home’ for too long, so she only allowed 3 days after her quarantine period to visit.

Mahalo, Malama the Aina
“Put it against your ear, you’ll hear it,” Amber told me. She handed me a conch shell and I didn’t believe it. I compared the waves slowly pushing against the sandy shore. I put my ear against the hard, white, oblong-shaped shell, and heard the soft wind easily blowing off inside of it; the ocean. It was her 9th birthday and her family invited me to Punalu’u Beach Park. I didn’t get her much of anything this year besides some cookies my mom had baked the night before because I needed to save lunch money for the rest of the week. The cost for school lunch just got raised to a dollar this year, and I wouldn’t want to add another bill for Mommy dearest. As I dragged myself in the water, I chased after her with the grainy sand against my bare feet then SPLASH! I fell forward with my face landing in the majestic and shallow waters near the shore. “Bra! You so Dakine” She laughed at me pulling me up. “Can we go eat now? I stay hungry!” I yelled.
