Baggage Left Behind
It was hot. Unusually hot. The street was bustling with people milling around everywhere. It was a typical sight for a weekend, the welcome morning heat though was anything but typical. Everyone was taking advantage to thaw out from the winter blues. Girls were in shorts and light summer dresses that moved freely as they walked. The boys wore light cotton shirts with arms bare. The mood was “suns out guns out”. Friends were catching up and wandering in and out of the shops. Couples walked hand in hand, trying to keep enough distance for the air to flow between them while still remaining close.

One more moment
Zee tried to have a good attitude about it, but sometimes it seemed like they were never going to find a house. How many offers had they put in over the last three or four years? Six? Ten? She’d lost count. Really, their standards weren’t even that high. They were looking for a fixer-upper within walking distance of public transit that would get her husband to work in less than an hour each way. Some of the houses they had looked at were absolute dumps that would need, at best, total renovation. They weren’t sure it was even possible to get rid of the cat smell in one of those formerly- and hopefully future-grand homes they’d tried to buy.

Southbank Stories
Jack was aimlessly wandering along the Southbank. He didn’t know where he intended to end up all he knew was that he was searching for something, anything. Anything to give his life a bit of meaning, give him a reason to stay on this earth. It’s not that he was suicidal as such, he was just feeling completely desolate, fed up and over life. Everything felt like such a chore. Ever since Amy left Jack couldn’t bring himself to do much other than work, sleep, repeat. He knew that it wasn’t healthy, he knew that he needed help, but he just didn’t know how.

Where is Grolly?
Two guys walk into a room. A living room of sorts, though calling it aliving room might be generous. Decorated in a combination of dorm room and ambivalence it is more like a tribute to despair and neglect. The tall one says to the other one, “what you got there?” “Dunno, a box from Amazon.”The other one opens the box, “oh look it’s the new Garry Rollins book. I didn’t know that there was a new one. But I didn’t order it. The tall one says, “I didn’t order that. You know I think his books are inane.” Have you even ready any of them?” “No, not really haven’t had a chance but I know the genre.” “For what its worth they are actually witty, well written, with well developed characters and plots.”. “Speaking of which, what are we going to do about that?” They both look across the room towards the end table, their eyes resting on a black moleskin notebook. “I don’t know, it’s been a really long time since he disappeared.” “I know and he never goes anywhere without his notebook. The fact that its been sitting here and we haven’t seen Grolly in awhile is making me nervous. It’s not like him to leave without it. He would sooner leave his phone behind. When was the last time we saw him?”

“Welcome to StarBean what can I get started for you?” MaryBeth asked this question 143 times during her shift. Not bad for a Tuesday - she almost had time to think between lattes and cold brews. The pandemic had shut down the sitting area; leaving it a jumbled mess of stacked chairs and random boxes of inventory, void of anything interesting. She missed cacophony of milk frothing, music and voices. She longed to walk around the café pretending to sweep and wipe down tables while eavesdropping on interviews, cram sessions and mommy escapes. “Oh well,” she sighed “at least the bathrooms stay clean.”
