For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
How You Choose to Help the Poor Can Have Consequences that Hurt Them and Your City
Everyone with a heart wants to help the poor. That is a truly noble concept. It is HOW you go about it that determines whether you genuinely help the poor or just grow their numbers in your city.

Being an Empath Is Not Always A Good Thing
Empathy is Khaleesi when it comes to how we care for others. She is the crowd favorite. We all aspire to be her. Compassion and sympathy look up to her. She’s iconic. Without her, you are at best, unkind, and at worst, a narcissist, according to the internet.

Walking in San Francisco.
I always found myself walking around day or night in San Francisco. I liked the way the fog hugged the street lamps, the many different colored houses all squished together, or just any place that I’ve stored a memory in my brain, which was quite frequent being that San Francisco is so fucking small. These walks became my affordable therapy sessions. It was a time for me to visualize and reflect on all the things I had been through lately, how to grow from them, or just a walk to appreciate my home town. And the beauty of it.

As Strong
I tried my best to live my life right. I didn't do drugs, barely drank while raising our 2 daughters. I worked overnights so that they wouldn't grow up with others. Not like we could afford daycare, anyhow. I took pride in being their main caretaker. I wanted them to learn from ME and YOU...and boy did they!

I Didn’t Mean It
Summer of 2015 in Vienna. I could tell you about the beautiful metropolis that reminds me of both war and peace at the same time, but that has nothing to do with my story since I didn’t get to see Vienna during the five days we were there. The only time I left the hotel was to take a bus ride to the government offices. I was attending a Civil Society Conference with a whole bunch of other activists not just from Bosnia but also from other neighbouring countries in the Balkan.

My superpowers
The Ashrama system in the ancient Hindu text describes the sequential four periods of human life. In the four ashramas of Brahmacharya (student), Grihastha (provider/householder), Vanaprastha (forest dweller), and Sannyasa (renunciate), emphasis is on the goal and development of oneself at each stage. As I look back, the first two stages of my life developed organically, from being educated in classrooms around the world, to building a successful career in a brand new country, and to my proudest accomplishment of becoming a mother of two. Not to say all this came easy, my life has not been free of struggles, to say the least, but has been fulfilling. Recently, as I have been reflecting on “what my third act should be”, I asked my 21-year-old son on life's purpose being he is a student of philosophy, and he thought-provokingly posed a question right back at me, “What does it mean to you to have lived a good life, Ma? And it can't just be family.” The irony of it is that family has been a priority for me all these years and it is also a time when I am separating from my husband of 30 yrs. But this young adult made me realize that a well-lived life for me is the one I had been leading, with my feministic instincts, showing up unapologetically courageous and empathetic to every scene of life, and not afraid to venture into the unknown.

When Do Americans Get Their Freedom Back?
This article was previously published by Dr. James Goydos on Soapboxie November 2021 “When do we get our freedom back?” It is the question that plagues many in the United States, as they have misconstrued the concept of freedom, diverting it from its intended meaning.

Public Servants Throughout History – What’s Their Motivation?
This article was previously published on Dr. James Goydos' website May 2021. I consider a public servant to be someone who works for the public good, either as part of the government or on their own. I do not include elected officials above the municipal level in this definition as few State and National politicians run for office because they are altruistic. Altruism is the hallmark of a true public servant, though it doesn’t have to be the main reason a person makes this choice.

The Diamond We Are
In my lifetime, I've heard and seen several sayings about jewelry, whether it's online, in a commercial or if it came out of someone's mouth. This has been along the lines of it being the icing to the cake to our natural beauty, that without it our outfit cannot be complete, that no one has ever said in their lifetime that they have enough, that there's no sin in being a little bit obsessed with it, and many, many more. The thing is, I haven't heard a story about how I've thought about it, at least not as exaggerated as I think it should be.
