humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
Rest Easy
I’m pretty old, dear reader, and it could be said that it has taken an inordinate amount of time for me to embrace some of Life’s Truths, and consequently, begin to live a more peaceful, restful life. To be fair, though, unless you happen to be the Dalai Lama, it seems to take many, many orbits of the sun, gathering and repeating experiences and mistakes along the way, before the message sinks in. And let’s face it, some never get there at all. So in case you’re not the Dalai Lama, I humbly offer the view from where I sit at this point in time, on the eve of a new year.

Life During Covid
China is well known for their contribution to the modern world. Gunpowder, the compass and even silk were all things that are used in the present day were concepts invented by the Chinese that have changed the progress of mankind. However, it was also the birthplace of one the most harmful diseases to plague mankind. The disease in which I’m referring is of course, Covid 19.

Me Flying Through the Clouds – The Nightmare That Has No End
A few weeks ago, I had a dream while sleeping at night. It was a nightmare - with lots of blood in it. I did not like my dream. It was really a big nightmare. Why do I have these nightmares lately? What on Earth do I deserve to have scared nightmares? Is there any reason I get those nightmares?

Goodbye
Goodbye. We say it to our friends after dinner, our families after the holidays, and when we end a phone call. It tells us that the conversation or a night out has ended and everyone has said what they had wanted to. It ties up the loose ends and most of the time leaves us feeling content with what happened before we said it. When the ability to say goodbye is lost it can leave you feeling empty and searching for a way to say it. I missed the chance to say goodbye to Jon by two days, just two days. It has left my brain searching for answers to questions I did not get to ask, forgiveness I did not get to give, and the weight of a million bricks on my heart.

Living Next to a Fire Hall
To the firemen stationed at the local Cloverdale firehall in two-thousand-and-three to two-thousand-and-four, you will never be forgotten in my mind for coming to our rescue when we needed help the most. My dad had fallen off a ladder while placing décor int the house, and he suffered a serious head injury when he hit the tiled floor. As blood began to pool, we called the emergency line and immediately, within minutes, firemen and emergency medical services personnel arrived and whisked my dad to the Royal Columbia Hospital. While you guys were only doing your duty, what you did next really touched my heart and made me all the more grateful to have firemen work close to our house. I never would have expected it but you mowed our lawn for several months, and I never got to fully thank you for your help, until many years had past, and by then, there was a new crew in the station. I just want to say thank you for your kindness to our family and for saving my dad’s life. In fact, my dad used to be a fireman in Hong Kong, and so I have a deep appreciation for firemen and what they do—risking their lives to save others.

Why We Must Always Take Sides
When asked what she had learned from the Holocaust, Susan Sontag said: “10 percent of any population is cruel, no matter what, and 10 percent is merciful, no matter what, and the remaining 80 percent can be moved in either direction.”

Back The Way I Came
Draining the dregs of my coffee, I glanced up at the clock. The night staff would be here in less than twenty minutes. It was almost time. It had been a typical shift, and we’d been busy right up to the end. Three new admissions, group therapy, the consultant’s round, dinner and then visiting. The last visitors had only just left and I’d had to escape to the office to write the report.
