humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
The Revelations of Bones
The morning of Friday, June 11th, 1999 began unlike any other morning in my life to that point. I thought nothing of it at first, but all these years later I remember waking that morning more than I can recall any other awakening in my life.

On Work
The right kind of work wouldn’t produce the “Sunday scaries,” or cause depression or anxiety among workers. It wouldn’t contribute to mass health problems, or harm the environment, or cause dissatisfaction with life. It wouldn’t make you wonder, “Is this all there is?”

When Danger Was the Thrill of It
I’m sitting on the old footbridge in my hometown, overlooking the river. We used to ride our bikes here as teenagers before we learned how to drive cars. We would meet up here and venture through the woods until we came upon the old train trestle that kids would jump off of for cheap thrills.

I guess I no longer need a brush
I stopped using deodorant when I found out I had cancer. It wasn’t a conscious decision; I wasn’t thinking that the aluminium in the deodorant caused my breast cancer or that I could go around stinking now that I had it. I unconsciously took a daily action out of the routine. It was something I could control. I think that is what I wanted the most, was to control. Control the narrative, control the diagnosis, control the treatment, control everyone’s reaction around me because I was in the spotlight now for all the wrong reasons.

My night in shining owl
Last bit of my morning routine where I have to just confirm my front door is locked. I pull on the handle tight and turn it to see if it opens just one last time. Good habits also die hard. I than arched my back to use my butt to push the screen door far enough away so I can turn and head out to my car. As it slams shut, I took that first step in the direction of my car and instantly blurt out…“Dammit those snakes are just not working”. “The neighborhoods are awake now”, I muttered to myself looking in the direction of my feet as I walked with shameful shoulders and shaking my head in frustration.

Random Acts of Kindness
Random acts of kindness should go without saying and not need a contest to bring out the best in people. In today’s complex world, it is sometimes rather difficult to show random acts of kindness without being looked upon as an oddity or crazy person. With the COVID pandemic on top of it all, there leaves little room for acts of kindness when everyone wears a masks or refuses to shake hands. However, words can affect people in very positive ways and can also be heard from behind a mask. Words are the backbone of our society, the way communities come together. Words affect another person’s mood and self-esteem. It is up to each and every one of us to use words in a positive way. This is how I will spread some kindness in my community.

Mervin, A New World Man
Namste -“Nuhm-uh-stay” means the spirit in me greets the spirit in you. My soul honors your soul. I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides. I honor the light, love, truth, beauty, and peace within you because it is also within me. In sharing these things, we are united, we are one, we are the same.”

Some Mornings Be Like That
My lower back was still hurting a bit when I woke up. I was up way earlier than I wanted to be awake. Every day can’t be Sunday morning which I know makes Sunday mornings all the more special, but I seriously wanted it to be Sunday morning where I could just turn the alarm off and sleep until I woke up (or the cats tickled me with their whiskers in order to be fed). Damn cats.
