humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
I’d Rather Be Accepting Than Afraid
You’ve probably noticed that the only types of people I constantly badmouth are racists and bigots. I speak often and at length about the ignorance of so many Americans. It’s a frustrating topic to focus on. I wish it wasn’t this way still, in 2022.

Eulogies
Eulogy 1: Civic Duty You were unremarkable in the way only young men can be. Confident, cocky, and wholly forgettable. We clumsily fucked until you were spent, and happy, and euphoric. I wish I could say you were charming or astonishingly handsome but I cannot. You were scared. The next morning your life would change in ways that cannot be specifically foreseen. I hope the collective always celebrates you on Veterans Day and not Memorial Day, but for me you will always only be a duty I served to my country.

Moving Solo to a New City at 23
What Amsterdam is like Living in Amsterdam is quite dreamy. Of course the city has some harsh realities (try finding housing without connections… borderline impossible), but, it truly is a fantastic place to live as someone in their 20s. There's always something to do for those who are social butterflies, and there's plenty of quiet and green space for those who prefer to spend time alone. The city is filled with cute cafés, great (vegan) restaurants, and, probably my favourite part, the international community is incredibly welcoming.

No Need For Resolutions
Marty sat in his one-room efficiency apartment watching New Year’s Eve festivities on his second-hand TV. Every year some celebrity counted down the seconds before the Times Square Ball began its descent, signaling the start of a new year. For Marty, the ball drop, and a calendar he received in the mail from his insurance company, were the only things that marked the end and beginning of each year. His life remained the same no matter the day, the season, or the year.

Door-In-the-Face
We all have been targets of marketers and salespeople who use well-established and proven techniques of "foot-in-the-door" and "low-balling," when the persuader starts out with a small request and then ramps it up to a bigger second request if you comply with the first one. In case of low-balling, the second request will be followed by the third, fourth, fifth, etc. into perpetuity until the target gets tired, exhausts resources to give, or figures out the manipulation. This excellent illustration from Curb Your Enthusiasm shows how foot-in-the-door and low-balling can be rolled together into a never-ending string of requests, making a good comedy.
