I Almost Love You
For the most part, I spent my days studying and focusing on school. There was one girl that caught my attention that seemed to be different from the others. Her name was Katherine and she seemed just as focused on her studies as I was. The only reason I became introduced to her was that she was the little sister of one of my older buddies, Zach. Can a Man & Woman Just Be Friends?
Can a Man and a Woman just be friends? Many say no, never, and for a long time I agreed, up until I lucked up and met the person that would become my BEST FRIEND. It started in the smoking area of a large health insurance company where we were employed. I would see him every day, same time, twice a day but we never spoke. We had a mutual friend whose name I will not mention but she was the catalyst that brought about our unity. We both cared a lot about her and things that were occurring in her life at the time. With only 15 minutes to smoke and counsel her we teamed up and let her know how we felt about her issues. From that day in 1998 forward; with a minor split that I will cover later we have been the Best of Friends.

Once upon a time, I worked in a magical place. There you could ride abandoned mine trains, blast off with space rangers, and go under the sea with your favorite mermaid. Like any fairytale heroine, I was overworked and underpaid. I worked long hours, making sure the people around me were having a magical time, while I was pretty miserable. I had moved there for a new opportunity, but was now suffering. I disliked my roommates, and struggled to connect and meet people who shared my cynicism.

Cutting Ties
No matter how long or how well you know someone it’s never easy to cut ties with them. Sometimes it’s necessary for your own mental health. I had to do it with a friend because it just seemed like a vicious circle of being amazing best friends to having snide indirect posts about me posted all over social media. Apparently I was a bad friend because I didn’t always instantly reply to texts and when I got a job I was too busy to go out.

I’m not sure how exactly to start this, but anyone that knows me knows you bring out the absolute best in me. When we’re together, we’re on a different level and EVERYBODY notices. You are an amazing friend, my truest, and for that I’ll cherish you forever. Other friends may come and go, but you and I, we’re connected. It’s probably because we have the same crackhead energy. I know I have a lot of growing to do, but you’re always there to help me through all the growth and change. You take me for who I am and push me to be a better person. I think the main reason we’re best friends is because you just get it. I don’t have to explain anything to you or worry if you’ll get the joke. You already got it and are on your way to making the next one. We’re best friends because you love me even when I’m terrible. It’s easy to love someone when they’re doing well, which I never have been well for the entirety of our friendship, but you’ve stuck by my side through it all. You’re always there for me, even when I don’t deserve it. We’re best friends because whenever we’ve gone long stretches of time without talking and it hasn’t damaged the relationship. We always pick up where we left off. You’re always happy for me, you’re always supportive. You’re my best friend because you’re not afraid to call me out on my shit or disagree with me. I can’t get away with anything when I’m with you. You’ll tell me the things that I need to hear, but everyone else is too afraid to tell me. I am so lucky to have your honesty. We’re best friends because you make me feel less alone in this messy and confusing world. It’s crazy how often you can feel disconnected from people. So many people can betray you, or fail to understand the words that are coming out of your mouth. When I see you, it’s a burst of reassurance that I’m not the only one who looks at the world the same way. There’s someone else and that someone is you.

Why I Haven't Talked to My Best Friend In Two Months
Coming out of high school, I left with one friend. One true friend that didn't do shady stuff behind my back, one friend who actually cared about me and loved me. We always told each other it was us against the world. Going into college, it was just us two. Neither of us had other friends and frankly even when we tried to get a new friend, they didn't connect right with us or we ended up not liking them. If you haven't noticed, in today's society, it's hard to come by girls that are genuine and nice. As of today, we've been friends for seven years, best friends for five or six years. She was my friend soulmate. We trust each other with every piece of information about our lives, we know every single secret there is to know about one another. But about a month or two ago, this all changed. I live in an apartment with my boyfriend. She would spend the night every weekend, along with my little sister most of the time. One weekend, I invited her over. She stayed two nights. The first whole day she left with my younger sister and didn't come back until like 10:30-11pm. I was excited to finally hang out with her, since she left me the whole day. She was talking to this new guy and she wanted to hang out with them. I always told her, she could come to my house and go hang out with a guy, being that her parents are strict. Before I moved out, she did the same thing for me. She would let me tell my mom I was spending the night, and I would hang out with my boyfriend or spend the night at his house. In some drastic measures, I would have to drive 30 minutes all the way to her house just to send a picture of us to my mom or my location so she knew I was with her. So of course, me now being on my own and having my own house, I would repay her the favor.
