The Slap
What I remember most about the slap is how the sound, like a shot, echoed across the dojo. I wouldn't feel the soreness, the tenderness, for a second or two. I was stunned. My body froze. I gaped at my teacher, trying to register what had just happened, but he'd turned away. I'm 58 and I had never been intentionally hit across the face before. By accident, sure, in sparring, or being jostled at a concert, or on a crowded dance floor or whacked with a tree branch. Never on purpose.

I Made My Choice, Now Leave Me Be
Youth is wasted on the young for many reasons. One of them is that the young have all the energy and creativity to potentially make great decisions, but don’t have the mental capacity to inhibit stupidity. The same holds true for me, at twenty-three years old, depending on what side of the coin you land on. I am simply trying to make a life for myself. However, the reminder that I am foolish and doing everything wrong is never far away. My mother called me recently and let me know exactly that. Granted, it wasn’t her intention to call me up and simply let me have it, that was just the course of the conversation. As if a year of a secret relationship didn’t cause enough chaos, let’s throw politics and a global pandemic into the mix.

That Time The Christmas Tree Fell on My Sister
I bet you read the title and had mental images of a Griswold-sized tree toppling over in a tidal wave of pine needles, ornaments, and tinsel, swallowing up a little girl as she clutched her teddy bear, helpless to stop the catastrophe in motion, resulting in tears, a ruined Christmas, and a life-long case of Christougenniatiko dentrophobia (that’s the clinical name for a fear of Christmas trees. Yes, apparently that’s a thing).

When life brings you to your knees
It is amazing how in this thing we call life that people take the good things that come along their way for granted. The worst mistake that you can ever do in life is to overstate or exaggerate your position in someone's life, as you might lose them if you take their love and support for granted. I have gone through this cycle in what feels like a million times. It is only when I shut the door on people when they realise the value and impact that I had towards their life.
