family
Family unites us; but it's also a challenge. All about fighting to stay together, and loving every moment of it.
Dear Mom,
I wish I could find all the words that best describe my mother. However, words just seem to fall short. No matter what she continued to push through the struggles life would throw at her. She kept doing so in order to give my brother and me a safe place to grow. A place that is full of support and love. Life growing up was never easy. It was hard on my mom with her being a single parent. She worked all the time just to provide but never complained about it. She had to face trials, tribulations, and fears, but she always persevered.

What Happened to the American Family
What happened to the American family? Women went to work. It started with the major feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s. To narrow it down further, I'd say consumerism killed the American family. When I speak of the American family, I'm talking about the family of European descent — the white people — the ruling class.

Children of the Forest. Runner-Up in Return of the Night Owl Challenge.
I can hear birds chirping loudly as they sing to each other high in the tree branches, the crunching of leaves by the feet of small rodents, and the running of river water somewhere off in the distance. Sun rays cut through the spaces of tree leaves and beam on my face. Small insects tickle the bottom of my feet as they run across the forest floor like small troops in a massive army. I woke up to the fresh smell of the pine deep in a forest confused as to how and why I am here. When I fully became aware I realized I was nowhere near home.

Coils of Guts
Hebron. ExxonMobil. Few years. Money’d get them outta St. John’s, set them up on the road to Calgary. Calgary. The promised land. And him, here on a metal island, with its long, long legs. Leeching coil at its trunk thirsty for liquid money. Got in on a contract. Knew this kind of work. Hard work. Hard on the body. Bottom work. That’s what they called it. Tanks on the back, loose in the suit, pressure protected. Through the moonpool on the umbilical. Bellman up above. Then the pigging, marine risers, pipes and down to the BOPs and mattresses. Don’t get the bends. Nasty sickness. Tingling pain, rashes all over, numb toes and fingers and spasms. Coughing up your guts. Not him. Knew what he was doing. But not right now. Shift was twenty-one days long, started next day. Ocean was dark as the inside of a closed casket. Is he dead. We could all be dead. Like Bruce Willis. Moonlight winked on the surf like the shiny scales of some huge inky fish. Peeked behind, over the shoulder. The drill made a racket as it twisted, coiled into the bed of the sea. You could always hear the rig working. It never stopped running, even Christmas day. It thumped like a heartbeat as it turned, sucking up its tar-black blood from the guts of the world. Guts. He missed her to his guts.

The River to Freedom
The blazing sun of Baghdad set once again and when it rose the next morning, the cries of a new baby boy echoed throughout the city. Aharon Matityahu, son of Meir and Tefaha, was born blessed by the very nature of his name. Aharon, brother and confidant of Moses who led the Jewish people to freedom. Matityahu, a Maccabi warrior who saved the faith all those years ago. He came into this world strong before he even knew what he had to be strong for.
