The Chance of a Lifetime
Walking casually down Olive Street, Carl savors the last of his sweet tea from lunch as he rounds the corner of the Bank & Trust building, where a light breeze caresses his face. This is a good day! He's off for the next three days and plans to connect with friends up state. As he passes a pay phone, it begins to ring. Startled, he stares at it as if it were a weird monster about to spring upon him! Glancing around, no one is rushing to answer it, so he relaxes and walks on, even as his thoughts shift to wonder, 'should he answer it?' It can’t possibly be for him, all of his friends and family call his cell phone, beside how would anyone know when he might possibly walk past this phone? Who, uses pay phones in this day and age?

Justin Bieber Wakes Up in the South of France to Find He Has Painted Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”
It is a hot summer morning and Justin Bieber is waking up. This is something he does every morning, but most mornings he is not in France and it is not the year 1889 when he does it. “Boom” Justin Bieber says. He is not aware that he is in France. He is thinking about his former dog Todd, who was born with a limp. Justin Bieber reaches for his phone. He needs to make a note about Todd. The limp. He needs to write in his Notes app “I have been dreaming about Todd again.” His therapist, Julian, will appreciate this. Keeping notes is part of “the work” Justin Bieber has been doing. With Julian. On himself. “The most important work of all” he whispers.

New start
"Okay my map app is saying i'm almost there!" Brittany grunted to herself while making a right turn at the intersection. She began to slow her silver Ford Taurus down as she glanced out the window, attempting to focus on the address numbers on the buildings.

The End of a Perfect Day
End of a Perfect Day. I glanced down at my watch and hoped she wouldn’t see. I’d timed it right; she was looking into the far distance and struggling to come to terms with the horizon. There was only eight minutes left before my shift was supposed to be over. Back at the station, I had been getting ready to go home, packing my stuff in my handbag, thinking about dinner… then the call had come in and I had come here.

The Stranger
He sat in the diner, people watching. It's what he liked doing the most. The grin of the old guy in the booth by himself waiting, as he did every day, for the waitress to offer to top up his coffee. The young couple with the infant in the pram, each taking their turn to hastily inhale a pastry or a mouthful of coffee before their child wakes up demanding attention. He watches as the waitress carefully peeks into the pram and whispers something to the couple who both smile and thank her for no doubt a kind word, unsolicited and heartfelt. He liked her. She seemed genuine. The bell rings for another order to be brought to another customer and she scuttles off to fetch the next meal for the seemingly endless needy customers. Today was different, it was mid-week and there seemed to be fewer people in the diner, the same pattern seemed to echo across all the diners he'd sat in.

All blue, everything
He reached for a pack of Marlboro's that he just bought that same morning, and pulled out what seemed to be the last cigarette still left in there. "The last one is always the sweetest..." he mumbled to himself as he finally lit it up, brought it closer to his lips and inhaled deeply. With the smoke slowly making it's way into his bloodstream, he felt himself sinking into the soft cushions of the old blue armchair. His head fell backwards as the smoke finally left his lungs, and for a moment it seemed like his body didn't contain a single bone in it.

Influence
They say that it's who you know... Joshua Penderson knew no one really. I mean, he sometimes would be recognized by the local coffee girl, because he always got a black coffee in the morning and she found it fun to say "A cup of Joe for Joe!" and he got tired of correcting her. Joshua Penderson had moved into his little apartment in Washington heights a few months ago, after he had missed the admissions deadline in his local community college, and so with the money he had saved up to go to school, he thought at least he could move out of the house. His mom was dating a new guy and what with her working all day and being out all night his interactions with her were little notes saying "Dinner's in the Fridge" or "Order something". There wasn't much to stay for.

Summer day...
Dear lover, it was my breath you took away when we glanced at each other in the summer day, when the glimpse of the sun shone upon your beautiful pale skin, and light filled your hazelnut-coloured eyes. It was like the breeze slowly turned our faces in the same direction, and there, our stare was locked. When you approached me, there was not much I could do but to look down slightly, but at the same time, the sunny day permitted me to see that your shadow was slowly approaching my presence. You came and nodded your head, gesturing to the space beside me on the bench, without saying a word but smiling. My girly innocence, my timid smile, made me nod my head in a way that communicated yes, and though neither of us said a word, somehow we understood each other.

Berny's Lucky Day
Berny Scrimshaw was a careful gambler. He thoroughly studied the form of every horse to race on a Saturday to help him make the best decision possible. The autumn carnival was nearing its end and the days were getting shorter. The chill he felt as he left the betting shop on dusk, belied the joy he experienced as he had just won $21,054 on the last race of the day. The rough 45 to 1 horse, Round-The-Outside, had poked its nose in front right on the line to make his four-race quadrella pay the largest amount all season. True to its name, it had come around the outside from the final turn to match and overtake such brilliant horses as Hoof-Hearted, Puma-Pants and WhyKickAMooCow, all more highly chanced thoroughbreds. The jockey, Peter Vaquero, whooped with joy as he realised he had taken the honours after a photo finish decision. Berny walked home whistling his favourite tune, the Music Box Dancer.
