The Cave
This is another story that I wrote for a Creative writing class during undergrad. This is a children's mystery that I was told by my fellow classmates/critics as an example of the 'Encyclopedia Brown' stories. I will be making a few changes and I hope they will be for the better of the story. I feel my writing aptitude has improved since 1990 when I had taken this course.

Stranger things have happened
The fact is my husband inherited this house from the elder who owned it and counted him as a son. When Devon's family first migrated from the Caribbean, they moved to a home a few blocks away from a man named Mr. Carleton. He lived in this beautifully maintained single- family home. The lawn was always well manicured and everyone admired it. The thing that really stuck out about Mr. Carleton was he lived alone; he never married and never had any children.

Dialogue in the mirror
Dialogue in the mirror An exasperatedly raised eyebrow raises, if that was even possible, even more, while Caroline examines critically her own image in the mirror. It’s early in the morning, she has just woken up with a fixed thought. No, her eyebrow seems to tell her, it’s not a thought, silly, it’s a feeling. Oh, hush, Caroline says. It’s too early now for me to even make the difference. I haven’t even had my coffee yet, and you know I can’t even dream of thinking before my morning coffee.

Bad Girl House 16
Josh’s birth was the last thing that the medial insurance I was given while teaching covered. A toddler, an infant, and a woman who had recently given birth had no health insurance. No one was getting regular check ups. I stopped breastfeeding when Josh was six months old. I wasn’t able to get birth control pills. When my periods started again, John made sure to monitor them. If I was even a few days late, a pregnancy test was bought. We were both relieved when I wasn’t pregnant, but undoubtedly for very different reasons. It was only a matter of time before I would become pregnant for the third time. John said the words he had dared to say two years earlier. I was again told to terminate the pregnancy. I found myself directly in the center of the same nightmare I had already lived through. My mind recreated the scene. I saw myself kneeling on the floor, gripping the phone, begging John to change his mind. My chest tightened and my stomach knotted. This could not be happening again. I was trapped by patterns of insanity that were impacting every part of my life, and each repetition became increasingly worse.

Catch Me on Fire
The living room is on fire, and I swear it’s not my fault. Well, maybe a little bit, but I didn’t actually light the flame. I may have ignored the first few loud pops outside my bedroom, but I wasn’t in the mood to check. I thought, “Hey, Felix is old enough to not do something utterly ridiculous”, but I was wrong. When the cheers of my brothers joined the pops, I knew something wasn’t right. I opened my door to a firecracker exploding right at my feet. I screamed and I could hear Felix laughing in the background.

Where it Ends and Begins
The sun was at the angle in the sky that flooded beams of gold light through the old house. The dust particles are instantly illuminated against the renaissance of shadows in the settled home. The particles lazily float as if caught bits of stardust on the blanket blue seas of the universe.
