Letter to Mom.
March 3, 2017 Mom: Today was a good one! As usual, you would love to be here. And I would love it if you were. I was on my way to work and I realized that spring is definitely on its way! You know I always send you pictures of the dead trees and the somber look they give to the campus. Well, today it has been pretty warm! Actually, it has been this way since I came back from Winter Break. I have to confess I am glad it is. I was tired of using boots and double sweaters! You know how easily cold I get.

In retrospect, Brad should have stayed to deal with the problem, but he’d become proficient at running away. He’d convinced himself it was the wisest choice to leave. He was good at that too. Darwin had shone bright as a city of refuge even after he had landed and been swallowed by the tropical heat and laconic apathy. He’d heard it was a place where exiles and drifters could gather in safety. Everyone was from somewhere else; each with their own story to tell. He needed such a place, so when a job offer had landed in his inbox, working as an electrician on the Inpex project, it had been an easy decision to go. Who could argue with the logic? His departure was probably a source of relief to some.

Reverse The Curse
“Bienvenidos a Pensacola!” That was the sign that I saw as I drove into what would become my own personal Twilight Zone. Of course that was somewhere around three years ago when I first arrived here. Now, I write this letter in hopes that the right person may pick it up one day and read it. Perhaps they will take heed to the warning of allowing themselves to get trapped in a desolate soul-sucking town as I have allowed myself to be. People always talk about the thrills and excitement that must come with visiting or living in Florida, but if they knew the real truth, they wouldn’t allow themselves to be consumed by their delusions.

Randomly Communicating
I am far from good at writing my mother was an Jamaican immigrant that spoke patois all day and my father was a sharecropper from Mississippi. My mother raised me with what she had and my father spoke to me on his terms and at times thought that I had to submit. What is submission? When it is your child acting in a way of protecting you from harm of others? How to know the boundaries of what is best for them to know and how to separate the two? But who knows besides what’s withering within.
