Hours had gone by since Devon’s phone rang... and all Mya could think to herself was, “Did I marry the wrong man? Have I been blind all this time? How in the hell did I get here?”
She was playing the “1000 questions” game without even knowing exactly what she was going to unvail once she picked up the phone. Mya continued to glaze at the phone. As the rapid heart palpitations increased, and the nerves in her body began to submerge, she reached for the phone.
“Why am I trippin?” Mya thought to herself. “Do I even want to know what this man has been up to!” With so much hesitation and dithering, Mya placed the phone back down and went to her couch and just contemplated about the possibilities of her happily ever after being completely fallacious. All Mya could think about was how desperately she needed to pray for God to prepare her for whatever was to come.
Mya was a pastors kid and church was her home away from home, that’s why she always turned to prayer whenever she got afraid or agitated. Every moral she had been taught about love and marriage came from Serinity Baptist Church.
Serinity was in the inner city. Corner store on every corner, Hair Stores on every other block, and Neighborly folks always knowing where to find the lastest movies and hottest styles for the low low!
Monday night service was from 6pm to whenever the church was ready to end, then Wednesday was Bible Study from 6pm until the pastor said it was over! and the same went for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Mya hated going to Serinity almost every day of the week.
First Lady Leza, Mya’s mom and Pastor Greg, Mya’s dad, were so devoted to the congregation at Serinity. They were so loyal and steadfast to the church that they never noticed how Mya and her siblings had to endure so much Mockery and scoffing from individuals that used and manipulated her parents.
There would be days that Mya would show up to church for dance rehearsal and people from the church would walk up to her and say “What do you think you are doing walking around the church with pants on? GET OUT OF THIS CHURCH RIGHT NOW!” It was always something with Mya and it always made Mya feel completely worthless. People always had something dreadful to say about her and Mya was always forced to defend herself. If it wasn’t the way she dressed, it was the way she walked. When people at Serinity grew tired of complaining about how she twisted her considerably large bump, they would simply tell her mother and father how she could never sit down in church or that she talked to much and she just never listened to anyone who tried to discipline her.
Over time Mya became immune to being the “black sheep”. She was use to the insults and the disparage from everything she was forced to endure at Serenity.
As Mya continued to sit on her couch, She could hear Devon’s voice upstairs answering a phone call. “I need to just look now before he comes downstairs” she said to herself.
As Mya looked into Devon’s old phone and glimpsed at some of the reply’s tears started rolling down her face with disbelief!
“Yes I know him! Who is this?”, “We spent a few nights together but I haven’t heard from him in a long time... Who is this?”, “ I have been trying to call him, I miss him! Who is this by the way?”
The message went on and on and on...
Mya always new that Devon has a very difficult and dreadful past. He had no relationship with his father and his relationship with his mother was always questionable. One thing Mya understood and knew for sure was that Devon loved his mother and his family no matter what!
Devon came from a place that was much more divergent than Mya. He had started working at 15 years old and was still getting phenomenal grades in school. It was books and hustle for Devon. He never really grew up in church or let alone spent majority of his childhood in the church.
Mya knew that Devon always had interlude conflicts with his faith and always questioned if God truly existed or not. Even though Mya was in disbelief about the responses she was getting, she also was no that surprised that Devon actually had been having affairs behind her back.
Devon always had hustle and growth on his mind! Nobody could tell Devon nothing else.
All Mya kept asking herself was “What is wrong with me?” “Did I get unattractive?” “Why couldn’t Devon talk to me about what he was feeling?”
She was going back and forth from feeling confusion and anger all at the same time!
As Mya was about to start responding to a few messages.... she stopped! She grabbed the phone and started moving towards the stairs at a leisurely pace. She finally made it up the stairs and stood at her Devon’s bedroom door with feelings of soreness and pain.
Mya stood there for a few minutes before Devon saw her standing there, they both looked at each and Devon asked “You wanna go out to eat sweet heart?”
Mya continued to stair and before she began to open her mouth to speak she gasped and said, “Devon...........”
