Keep it Safe

Adventure beyond the grave

By Alissa KnoxPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

“Brrrrr!” Lexi said to her husband as they were exiting the movie theatre. It was about 1 am when they were leaving the theatre. Brax, graciously puts his arms around his wife while walking to the back of the parking lot to their car. They were the only two in sight, or what they had thought. As Brax opens the door for Lexi, an old man grabs Brax by the collar and whispers. “Keep it safe!” Brax was startled by the old man, and before he could do or say anything the old man took his last breath and fell to the ground. “Oh my god! Did he just die?” Screamed Lexi. Brax had no words, taken back and only to be holding a little black book and the old man lying dead at his feet.

After they called the 911 and were finally able to head back home. Brax looks over at Lexi, and showed her the little book the man had given him. “Why didn’t you show the police?”

Brax calmly answered. “That mans dying wish was literally to keep it safe. So that’s what I’m going to do.”

The couple arrived at their home, sat on the couch and opened up the book. To their surprise it was nothing what they were expecting. The first page said. “If your reading this I’m fucking dead! About god damn time. However I have clues to lead you to something that I would like you to find and bring it to my funeral. My name is Wyatt Wells. Look me up in the obituary section of the news paper. Or you probably have one of those smart ass phone most kids have these days. Either way. That’s me. Now get off your lazy asses and do something that’s not in front of a screen. And you just left a movie so your eyes are probably drained, go eat a carrot while your at it.

Shocked by how it seemed this man knew exactly how he was going to die and had everything set up. By this time it was 5:30 in the morning. The couple looked anxious and giddy at each other and unanimously said. “Challenge accepted.” Then walked out the door.

Clue 1: Go back to wear my dead body was. Then walk in the direction I was coming from. Find the piece of nature that looks like it belongs but doesn’t. Good luck! Hope whoever you are ain’t stupid!

They go back to the scene of where it all began. Walk in the direction the man would have came from. They ended up at the other side of the parking lot In front of stone wall. Lexi who has an eye for things that seem out of place, immediately found a fake tree. Brax grabbed it and heard something in side it. He then took out his pocket knife and grabbed the object. It was a key and with the 2nd clue.

Clue 2: Haha dumbass turn to page 62 in my black book. Do you think I would leave a major clue where anyone could find? They both bursted out laughing. Quickly turned to page 62. All it said was jokes on you again I meant page 32. “Man this old guy thinks he’s hilarious beyond the grave!” Brax mumbled. Turning back the pages to 32. Wyatt wrote there is a locker Nearby which has what I need in it. The locker number is on the last page. Getting more and more anxious. They find the number and around the number was a bowling ball. Lexi asked “Do you think his locker is at the bowling alley across the street?” Brax said “only one way to find out.”

They walk to the bowling alley and find locker #20. The key worked! To their surprise was a Polaroid camera with a note saying, “take a picture of you lucky bastards. Bring that picture to my funeral. And give to director.

The couple found Wyatt obituary in the paper like the old fart said. He died February 2nd, 2020. They went to the funeral and gave the camera and picture to the director. The director immediately walks to the casket and yells! “DAD are you fake dying again? And putting nice people on wild goose chases?” The old geezer hopped out of the casket and handed Brax an envelope and whispered “Spend it well, and don’t tell my son!”

The coupled laughed and chatted for a bit with Wyatt. Asking him how he got away with the ambulance. The old man laughed and said “that paramedic is my fun son.” He lets me have fun. I turned 102 today!”

When they were driving back home, Brax looked over at Lexi and handed her the envelope. Lexi caught off guard said what is it now? Don’t tell me he has another joke or trick up his sleeve?”Brax smiled and said $20,000.
