AR Rahman

Ar Rahman is a successful film musician, composer and record producer. He is a prominent Tamil musician and Indian music composer. Born as A.S Dileep Kumar, he later changed his name to Allah Rakha Rahman after converting to Islam. His classical piano studies began at the age of four under the tutelage of his mother, who was also a music teacher. Ar Rahman has worked on numerous projects in various languages such as Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam films. He has composed numerous successful soundtracks for the Indian film industry which have gained him great recognition not only in India but abroad too. His soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire won him two Academy Awards making him the first Indian to achieve this feat! Notable works include Roja (1992), Dil Se (1998) and Taal (1999). He is known by many names such as Isai Puyal (The Musical Storm) and Mozart of Madras due to his contribution to Indian music with an original fusion of traditional orchestral arrangements combined with electronic sounds from synthesizers and computer-generated imagery. Ar Rahman continues to be one of India's most popular composers today!

He first pursued music under the tutelage of his mentor and father-in-law, R.K. Shekhar, a musical mudaliar Tamil music director who was also the creator of popular Indian television show 'Sun TV'. His formative years were spent learning to play various musical equipment and instruments such as the harmonium, keyboard and piano from his guru Ilaiyaraaja Ilaiyaraaja. After working on several musical projects in Chennai, Ar Rahman moved back with his family to Delhi where he worked as a keyboardist for various Indian television features. Today, Ar Rahman is an icon whose music has come to define Indian cinema!

AR Rahman, the Oscar-winning composer, is a living legend. In 1992, he met with Bollywood music director Ilaiyaraaja and his cousin AR Raja signed Rahman as a keyboardist in YM Studios. This was his entry into the Bollywood film industry. AR Rahman started working at YM Studios as an assistant to Mani Ratnam and later moved to Panchathan Soundstage studios for further work on various projects for Mani Ratnam's films like Roja. He also composed jingles for advertisements and soon got an opportunity from one of the biggest Bollywood film directors of all time, Mani Ratnam. This opened up new avenues for him and he worked on many of Mani Ratnam's films including Roja which was his maiden film venture in India.
