Now I have to withhold names and locations to protect the innocent. This is what I call taking one for the team. Heck, I'm not even going to tell you the year, because if this gets back to him, there will be fire in the city. I'm sure that when he reads this, he will remember the story all to well and start to laugh. I just hope his wife doesn't read this because she will put two and two together.
The time was hot and homecoming was in the air. I was new to the city and been here times before. For this very first time, I was a permanent transplant and this was my new city. I gave my friend a look and told him that I was going to homecoming and that he didn't need to attend. I was just telling him as a courtesy and wanted him to know where I was going. At the time he didn't reply and the morning continued without a concern in the air.
Well time came to go to the homecoming of the year. People everywhere and the excitement of the band playing at halftime and the college atmosphere was in the air. I could smell it as if the campus was right around the corner. It was time for me to pull off and he told me that he was coming. I shook my head in disbelief because I knew this would cause smoke in the city. Like his wife was going to be ok with us going to homecoming miles away from the city. The intense moment of departing came and I just knew that things were about to boil. His wife wasn't about to allow her husband to attend homecoming with his single friend.
I got in my car and started the engine. He came out and did not have any visible blood, so I thought everything was ok. His wife and child stood at the door as if he was leaving forever. I looked at my friend and asked if everything was OK, and he said, "Yeah, Let's go to Walmart before we get on the road!". Off to Walmart we went! We could have made a stopped to any other place, but he chose Walmart and the long lines to delay my anticipated thrill of homecoming fever. So after minutes of walking isle after isle, we came upon some bug spray for our outing.
Mission accomplished and off to campus. The atmosphere was as advertised. I paid many visits to this campus before, but never during this time of the year and was I like a kid in a candy store. The band was live, the people were friendly and my friend was reconnecting with old college buddies and having a good time. The hours got behind us (as time always flies in the submission of a good time) and we started to make our way home. The hour was late and I was surprised that there was no smoke in the city.
I got up to make my Ultimate Flap Jacks and eggs for the house to give an easy transition to the morning. I started to put the butter in the pan and gather my ingredients, as she popped around the corner and said, "My husband told me that y'all were going to Walmart yesterday!". I could not hold a straight face and my response was not to welcoming as I laughed with a careless look on my face. Fortunately, there was no smoke in the city because I could only imagine his face when she asked him why did the trip to Walmart took so long. If I was only a fly on the wall to see his face. Oh well, I took one for the team that day, but homecoming was all the way live!
