The Value of Her Surprise
Gabriel had sensed it long before he had even reached the front door. It was likely because it was a beautiful fall day and he was driving home with the convertible's top down. At first, he simply assumed he was just smelling the remnants of her on the leather seats, like a warm memory. He was excited to have a three-day weekend ahead with the love of his life. But then that scent grew stronger until he was pushing the buttons of the neighborhood gate code, and like a predator sensing for another predator through the winds, he inhaled deeply. The scent was unmistakable; his hands clenched tight around the steering wheel.

My breath shuddered as I began to feel my nerves start to roll my stomach and cause my limbs to shake. “Not now, not now.” My breaths began to speed up in unnatural patterns. I started to pace, trying to focus on bringing my breath to a slow rhythm. Darkness began to creep into my vision as I slid my body to the ground, collapsing under the weight on the anxiety that was pushing on my chest. These attacks never come at convenient times and this was an inconvenient time. I was fighting for life, literally and this was not the moment for this.

Both are incredibly skilled hunters, but of course, Naru isn’t given the same credit as her male peers. But when a Predator (Dane DiLiegro) lands in their territory, Naru is finally given the chance to show just how good of a hunter she is.

The Red Pickup Truck
Mary sat in the passenger seat of the pickup truck waiting for Tom to get back. He had told her to wait in the truck for him. They were parked in a dirty old junkyard that Tom had come to look for a part for his new (well, new to him) 1962 Chevy pickup truck that he had bought just the week before. It was a beautiful cherry red and in pretty good condition even if it was 3 years old now. The interior was almost flawless and Tom had scrubbed and cleaned the vehicle so it would look its best for their date. Tom had left the keys in the ignition so Mary reached over and turned the key just enough to let the radio play. She scanned the dial looking for a good rock-n-roll station hoping to hear another great song by The Beatles. She loved their music, it was different than most music being done in the U.S. these days and she also liked the new look they brought with them from England.

A shoe stands on its end, the toe pointing into the air. It’s an evocative image, shoes don’t do that. But a shoe does do that in the new Jordan Peele horror thriller Nope. Come to think of it, the sight of a shoe in such an unnatural position is the kind of image that might cause one to say ‘Nope’ while slowly backing away from whatever might be the cause of this image. It’s not just a shoe though, there’s a well placed drop of blood on that shoe as well that offers another disturbing aspect to this sight. Then the context for the shoe comes fully into frame and…

He struggled to push away the layers of overwhelming fatigue that made even opening his eyes an almost impossible task. Not fully conscious but he was aware enough to realize that this was not the result of a night of overindulging. No amount of beer or even whisky could ever create this kind of havoc. This had to be some sort of drug, and it was a lot more powerful than the weed he occasionally vaped. Slowly and painfully his brain shook off the effects and his eyes began to open.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) - Movie Review
The latest entry into the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is a bumpy one, although not entirely awful, there are plenty of gross gore effects. Leatherface himself looks terrifying and is equally deadly. Because of this, the horror in general is very well executed, characters die painfully, within seconds of meeting this lunatic. There really is no escape, as Leatherface knows his hometown like the back of his hand, while all of these strangers run around like headless chickens, unable to escape from death's grip! Acting wise, people genuinely look terrified when Leatherface charges for them. So with all of these intense thrills, what is it exactly that makes Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) a mixed horror movie rather than a perfect slasher?
