The Message, Signs

Once October first hits, it is officially spooky season. It happens to be one of my favorite months of the year. Not only is there beautiful weather and the changing of seasons, but its the month full of spooks, supernatural, all paranormal and everything mystical. Some would say it is magical. We see the tree leaves go from the gorgeous green, to spicy reds, wispy yellows, crunchy browns and then to the bare trees that look like they are going to creep down to pick you up with their prickly finger like branches. It becomes difficult to distinguish the dead from the living. Not only trees but all life. Is that a zombie I see in the distance or just a human in costume? Is that a cute dog or a wolf ready to pounce? Only you will find out. October is best spent watching your favorite horror films with your favorite people or alone under your blanket. There are so many films worthy of watching this month. One comes to my mind more than others. It is a tale full of thrills and wonder. It begins with mystery and the changing of the global mindset, which is quite unnerving within itself. To have such a great event occur that changes the way everyone on Earth, all 8 billion minds, shifted to a new and terrifying unknown wondrous world. All because first contact was made with extraterrestrials. The one movie to watch every Halloween season is Signs.

When I first watched the movie, my heart raced in most of the scenes where the E.T.'s were involved and I did not really understand the rest since it was when I was younger. While re-watching it more recently I noticed so much more within the film than just aliens and the suspense the family suffered through. It shares a story of a Father who has lost faith in his God, his family who depends on faith to get by and the miraculous events that occurred to renew his faith.

Growing up, one of the comments I heard most about the movie was that it was not good due to the acting. You may believe there is bad acting involved but if you look at it from a different point of view, you can understand why the actors are acting in particular ways. They have taken up the personas of a family that lives in a small uneventful town out in the country. They are also a family that has experienced a loss in the mother figure and a transformation of the father figure in losing his faith. You can see where the film is attempting to help us understand the mindset of the adult male characters. They are not too open minded in their beliefs and a bit of air heads because of it. The lives of these people are completely changed and throughout the whole movie they are faced with change and their beliefs are challenged. We see that the children are more prone to adapting to the new information coming in to everyone from the reveal of the aliens in the movie. If you watch the movie understanding the families perspective on life in general, you will notice that the acting is spot on. Each awkward pause and comical moment are all realistic moments that you have probably experienced yourself at some point. Being able to relate in this film is what will give you the chills that go up your spine. There are many ways to react to an alien invasion and end of the world type scenario. This is the way they reacted. Others could have ran and yelled through the streets, went to their home lands, met up with all of their loved ones, or any other way. How would you react? What would you be thinking? With the news spreading constant fear about the unknown, how many people would be convinced that they were about to die ever so soon?

The reason the movie is so terrifying is because this is how a realistic alien “invasion” would come to happen. I put invasion in quotations because I do not believe the movie is about an invasion. I agree with one of the radio hosts in the film where he put it as a human harvest season. From watching the movie from my beliefs, I have come to apply a different much larger message to the movie than so many others have. I believe the movie itself is a warning to us humans as a species from the director M. Night Shyamalan. Like I said, I am seeing this message from my perspective on life and it is just one possibility. I did not watch anyone talk about the movie so this is just my input. That being said, that is one reason watching it seasonally is a good idea, but also because it is a global warning.

The way I see it, there are 5 main species in this movie. There are Humans, dogs, birds, Alien species one that I consider to be the reptilian, and alien species 2 that I consider the greys. Reptilians are of Earth but live in giant cave systems under the surface of the Earth which humans live on. They live underground because of the sensitivity to water they have. They are completely exposed to the elements on the surface and they cannot cope like us humans do. The greys can be referred to the gods. If you have seen Ancient Aliens, you will understand why I say that. If you have not, I highly recommend watching it. They are the ones who created the crop circles and the ones that are in the skies. They created the crop circles as a warning to the humans. This warning is to put them on high alert to watch out for the human harvesting that the reptilians have planned. The greys know because they have transcended to telepathic communication and the reptilians are also capable of this. They can also read minds. The greys are also capable of sending messages to us humans through their telepathic abilities and it is possible that the movie shows that children are more susceptible to receiving the messages. In particular, Bo, the kid daughter of Graham. She doesn't like to drink the contaminated water from the faucet. We all know that there are so many different chemicals in our water supply to keep it “clean”. She does not drink the water, she is young, and she has faith. She receives prophetic dreams throughout the film, so this tells me the greys are trying to communicate with them this warning, the message. The way I see the story plays out has me believing that the ones I consider, the greys, have made everything play out perfectly to make sure that everything is in place to get this family through the struggle of the human harvest. If any one event changed, the events could have played out completely different. The stronger the faith was within the family, the more they would avail. They were not alone, they have guardians and all they need is faith. On the other hand, all the reptilians are out for is the humans' fear. The more fear within the family, the closer the greens got closer. If you aren't spooked yet, please do go watch the movie Signs with this perspective and you will be. Prepare for the unknown.
