Can water commit murder?
“Can water commit murder?” I asked as we both bit back our shots of alcohol. “Why not?” the near-stranger in the Letterman jacket standing next to me asked as he looked at his now-empty small plastic cup with derision. Opening and closed his mouth as if to air out the bitterness resting on his tongue. Looking every bit at a man who’d just swallowed poison. “It can be a liquid, a gas, a solid… why not a murderer.” His voice was low, sapped as if he were speaking in his sleep, and this scene was a bad nightmare.

The Lake Bed
She lay on the filthy bed, and tried to ignore the sensation of grimy handprints, still warm on her naked flesh. She has a break now, it seemed, from the hours of rutting she'd had to endure that day alone. They would be back soon, she knew, wanting more. Always wanting more. They took what they wanted, and left their filth and feces behind, smeared all over her skin.

Eight glasses a day to keep the demons away ...
Part One: Mother The family is gathered at the long table overlooking the lake at the back of my father's house—in reality, the lake is a pond, but my father demands grandeur from all his things. Now that he is gone, my mother has reluctantly claimed his seat at the helm. Like the pond, his seat at the table is grand. Like the table, it is made of Cypress—the eternal wood. It will never rot, nor any insect infect it. My father was so sure of it, he had the grand table and chairs set as close to pond's edge as possible. Taunting the dark water to a challenge.

Prison dare
Walking through an abandoned prison was not my idea of fun. But a dare is a dare and I'm not going to be the guy who said no to a date. If I did, my time in highschool would be officially over. I was carrying a video camera with me to record the experience because everyone was too chicken to come with me. I had just moved to this town so I had to cement myself amongst my classmates immediately or I would be doomed to obscurity. According to one of the kids who gave me the dare this prison was left abandoned about ten years ago. Reports of abuse and the like had been coming out of the prison for years as well as a number of "missing" inmates.

Deals
Three hours ago the sky was clear, the wind at our backs, and the sea was wonderfully calm. Me and my men were singing and drinking after a successful raid on a small port village. Now we were in the middle of a raging storm and a maelstrom that had opened in the middle of it all. On top of that cannonballs were flying past and occasionally hitting the ship. The cannonballs were from an English Navy ship that had been dispatched just for us. I'll admit I did feel special at this moment.

Laundromat
Isaias sat sideways on the very last of a line of pale blue fiberglass chairs that were connected by a thick single metal bar underneath. He was looking out of the large laundromat glass window at the sky above the old run-down buildings that lined the street.
