The Broken
The liquid in his glass was the colour of despair and hopelessness - whiskey, the drink for the broken, the lost and most importantly, the ones who see their glasses as half full. These feelings were not uncommon for David, but they were what represented him. He was two people: the existing - the persona that made him walk out the front door to his shitty job every weekday at 6am, without fail, to provide for an ungrateful wife that begrudged him for saying the wrong things, for not making enough money, and working too late.

The Spider
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. A lone hiker shook the match out and slid the burnt stick back into the matchbox. The light of the candleflame reflected in the window’s glass and flickered for a moment as he shut the door behind him. In the warm glow, the hiker observed a carpet of dust on the floor and grey tangled cobwebs matted across the window panes.

Cabin In The Woods
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Screaming winds and screeching wolves joined in sync the dance of the flames. Screams and laughter echoing into the night as the moon illuminates all around. The creeping shadow of an unknown figure lingering about the flames, whispering words known only to her and the spirit she is evoking. Blood drips down into a bowl filled to the brim with the thick nauseating liquid. Smoke filled the room and the aroma of death radiated throughout the cabin. Not a thing in sight, the wrinkled lady speaks. “ It should have worked. Hello? ” Silence.

Refuge. Runner-Up in Campfire Ghost Story Challenge.
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Florence sat atop her rusted bike in the moss-covered yard. Eyes transfixed on the flickering that illuminated the black contrast of the cabin at dusk. Shadows dancing gleefully behind the flame. Keep on the path home, she thought.

The Cabin in the Woods
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It’s one sentence, shy of twenty words. It’s simple and unintrusive, as most stories tend to be when told for the first time. It is a hook, Traveler. It is the start of a warning you did not heed.

The Last of the Winstons
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. This wouldn’t have been troubling, except for the fact that Jacob was the last of the Winston family. The sixty-three acres of land his family owned in southern New Hampshire had sat empty–except for him, the manor house he grew up in, and the abandoned cabin in the woods–for the last six years since his Pa passed away. He should be well and truly alone on the property.

Lost Simon
LOST SIMON By Peter Giles The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It flickered in and out in the darkness and Red guessed correctly Dan hadn’t found the flashlights yet as he walked toward the old rescue shelter. Nobody had gone missing in Natas Valley before and this was big. Real big. How could a three-year-old seemingly vanish within a ten-minute window at the campsite that he was the part-time Forest Ranger?

The Weary Traveller
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It certainly looked ominous, Peter thought, especially on a pitch-black night like this. There was a certain…restlessness that stirred in the oppressive shadows, the way they entered inside you and played with your deepest, darkest fears; so much that you fully believed that monsters were real and were waiting for you just beyond the faint glow of the pearlescent moon.
