The House That Forgets You
The house was too quiet when Daniel arrived, its silence so complete that even the crunch of gravel beneath his shoes felt like an intrusion. He had come for peace, that’s what he told himself. After the city, after the noise, after the failed relationship and the job that had hollowed him out, the small countryside home seemed perfect. The rental listing described it as “a charming, secluded property ideal for those seeking solitude.” Solitude was exactly what Daniel thought he needed.

She had bought it at a flea market in a small coastal town, drawn to its dark wooden frame carved with swirling ivy and strange symbols. The seller, an old woman with pale eyes, had smiled when Emily admired it.

The Brood
The Brood is a thoroughly sickening and repellent horror experience — but not until the climax and conclusion of the picture. It hovers over brutal, gory killings performed by seemingly child-like mutant dwarfs in little white suits. These are the minions, or so it seems, of psychiatric cult guru Dr. Raglan, played with subtle undertones of high menace by the late, great Oliver Reed. (Curiously, upon watching the film, we learned that co-starring lead actress Samantha Eggar — who also did a turn in the regrettable Mexican demon-possession flick Demonoid (1981), which is utterly forgettable but does have a great movie poster image of a bluish-black, sword-wielding demon with big-time horns — total eighties cheese heavy-metal album cover image — had literally died the week before. And they say there’s no greater structure to the Living Universe.)

V/H/S Halloween is an Urban Legend Extravaganza
This is one of my favorite additions to the V/H/S franchise. I knew I was already going to watch it, since it was only going to be based on Halloween. I was not expecting every single story to be based on some kind of urban legend, and each segment was so awesome in its own way. The gore in this film was next level brutal, and no single person was shown any shred of mercy in any of these short films.

Down a Dark Hall (2018), Director: Rodrigo Cortes If somebody asks me what this movie is about, I just say, “I have no idea.” I try to look past a low IMDB score because maybe it’s wrong. Down a Dark Hall is a scattered story that makes no sense. The main reason why I watched this film was for its cast. AnnaSophia Robb, Uma Thurman, and Isabelle Fuhrman are all talented actresses. They do their best with a confusing script that was in the dark from when it first began. Rodrigo Cortes had a promising direction and a good story at heart, but not much effort was enforced.

Seven Footprints to Satan
Thelma Todd spent the last night of her life dying in her car, the cause of death presumably carbon monoxide poisoning. It was suspected that gangster Lucky Luciano had ordered the hit because Todd had refused his request to put illegal gambling machines in her roadside eatery. Luciano denied this accusation to his close associates. To this day, it is unknown exactly how Todd managed to kill herself, passed out in her car.
