The New Guy
I come out of the hole feeling the way I always do when finally being allowed to rejoin the general population: disoriented. Discombobulated. Vulnerable. Skittish. Basically, whatever word you can think of that means that by the time they let you out, there's nothing you want more than to crawl back in.

The Meadow
Taking a deep breath I hitched my backpack up higher on my shoulders as I trudged down the forest path following behind my dad and little sister. The trees towered above us we walked along in silence, branches swaying in the slight breeze, the cheerful sounds of birds and insects in direct contrast to our own more solemn mood. As the path continued and we moved steadily forward towards our destination the trees began to thin and I could see glimpses of a large clearing up ahead.

Last Train to ERGO
I was searching for that look, that morsel, that hint of a chance, that look the jackpot. No, no , no, maybe, NO, nope, nada, nit, nah, nay, maybe, ooh maybe. I sit down trying not to let my heart stop from the wonderlust that is the game with no name, my game, the game you only talk about to God at night to stop you from playing but, it is she that wills you on. A snap reels my head back into the present as I stumble into the seat trying not to buffoon animal myself too much.

Ballad of Zellen
Miss Madeline loved her dolls. Her house was lined in porcelain souls. She sat amongst her stale friends and wondered what could possibly fill her heart again. She pondered and wondered, well looking into the silhouetted wall. Seeing the blankness that peers from dimensions to all. She sought at the moment to make it so, “A new friends will lie within the mirror of my soul. She was of beauty in framed in a capsule that created, she is not a ghost but made of glass, sculpted up in a porcelain bath. She will remain forever and so, as long as I live, the power will grow.”

Wisteria
Listen… what I’m about to tell you will change your life. Just like it changed mine. I swore I’d never put these words into the universe. That would make them real, give them existence here. There’s a secret they’ve been keeping from us. I discovered the truth and you should know it too.

I Stayed with an Old Woman in the Mountains
The sun was down for nearly two hours when I came upon a gas station. The highway had been long and bare, so the station’s lighting was much more jarring than usual. Parking, I read the paper given to me, containing the details of the bed & breakfast, as well as their directions which I only then realized were too vague. My exhaustion and impatience got the better of me, and despite the late hour, I called the number.

Prescott Partings & Company
It was a wet, late autumn and matted leaves coloured brown, yellow and red were raked in ovals larger than the shrubs in their thickets lining the front of the cemetery yard. In the morgue’s embalming room below its chapel, parlour, down a spiral flight into the basement on a cold, clear and dreary evening the funeral home’s mortician had begun the process, draining substance of red from the veins, forcing one in and the other out. The removed articles of clothing, in a bungle on the floor and stained with the essence of final substances released yellow and brown, he rolled into a ball and threw in the trash.
