Primal Spirits
When I was a child, I heard stories of primal spirits, spirits that took the form of animals and were created from some primal desire. It was said that primal spirits were most often created from bloodshed or hunger. I never believed it until I was hired to work on the Kenya-Uganda Railroad in 1898.

Black Dogs
It had been a slow night for a purse-snatcher like Gary, he had not been able to find one decent purse, and he also could not find too many women or girls out that night. There had been a story early that week about three women that had been found dead, Gary knew all about them, the women had fought to keep their purses but they lost the fight with Gary’s knife. Now, he was regretting killing the women because the streets were empty except for the homeless, the police and those that considered themselves brave. Gary needed to find one decent purse before he went home.

A Writer's Destiny
I was disoriented this morning when I woke up. I felt that something was wrong; this was strange for me. I sat up with a groan in my bed and realized that I could see, my glasses weren't on and I had needed prescription glasses since the second grade, and then I realized something else… I wasn't wearing my CPAP mask and I knew I went to sleep wearing it. I got out of bed and then looked back at my bed, I always made my bed in the mornings after I woke up, and that's when I realized it: I had died. In my bed, was me: my body. I couldn't believe it and I couldn't understand; I was only 25 and a healthy college student except for some minor problems like my sleep apnea. But there I was on the bed, my chest wasn't rising and I knew I didn't have a heartbeat either. I was dead.

My name is Sam Loretski, I used to work in a small department store, and I love to invent things but I’m not very good at it. I guess you could say that I was soft-spoken; I hated fights and avoided them as best I could, but my wife was a very loud and brash woman who loved to yell. My wife’s name was Nadine, she was a woman that is hard to understand, I loved her with all my heart but our marriage has always been rocky. I grew up very poor, I never really lived in a house while growing up so our life was perfect to me; we had a small house and enough money to pay the bills. We had a good life until he sent that box! That box changed our lives, it ruined Nadine’s life!

The Helpful Stranger
Gina was a normal girl; the youngest of two children, with loving parents and a good life in their dreary New York town. Gina was having a bad year though; she started at Watertown High School where her friends all left her, leaving her the main target for bullies, and her grades were dropping because of the stress from the bullying. It was so much different from Case Middle School, it was crueler, and the students knew how to make her cry.

The Night-Stalker
The only thing outside were the scarecrows scattered in the fields, towering over the crops of corn and wheat, like lookouts always at their posts. The closest ones to the house seemed to be watching it with their button eyes, silently watching over the house.

Elevator
Betty looked at the elevator with some fear in her big green eyes, she hated elevators but she had a lot of meat on her bones and she could not walk up to the sixth floor of the dorm building. The elevator dinged as the door opened and Betty gulped as she stepped in. Her heart was pounding in her chest and she was quietly panting, panic was rising inside her but she had to take the elevator. Betty hit the button for her floor and waited as the door closed; she leaned back against the far wall and clutched her coat closer to her. It was not cold or anything but her fear sent shivers up and down her spine.

It is a sad thing when a marriage goes sour, it is even worse when a wife has an affair under her husband's nose; that was the situation that Trish Black was in. Trish Black was a beautiful woman that had grown up poor but that all changed when she managed to meet and marry Eric Black, an artist and an art collector, but it was hardly two years into their marriage that Trish became bored with her husband and she wanted out of her marriage.

On the Mountain
Rick was a hunter that was freezing as the wind blew snow in his face; it blinding him for a moment. He had never seen a blizzard come in that fast before, now he was lost on the side of this stupid mountain, and he had no idea how to get down to his truck. He shivered and pulled his coat closer, he could barely see and he was cold, he had to find some sort of shelter for the night or he would freeze to death. Then he slipped in the snow and started to slide down the slope, feeling snow and branches under him as he slid down, he clutched his rifle against his chest or he would lose it.

Casserole
Casseroles are comfort food. They are supposed to remind you of family, of love, and warmth. They say that when tragedy happens to a family, you should take them a casserole to help them in their grief; something about so they don’t have to worry about cooking. That’s what my grandma had told me at least. My grandma always made casseroles for her friends and neighbors whenever something bad happened: the bachelor next door broke his leg, the family down the street had a fire, the spinster two houses up had a car accident, this neighbor had a death in the family, that friend had a medical issue, or whatever tragedy it was.

My Favorite Christmas Tree
Christmas vacation had started like it usually did with Mom and Dad taking me to the Christmas tree lot to pick a tree. I saw one tree and I loved it; Dad looked at it and he seemed to hate it. But it was Mom that agreed with me.

Family Legacy
“Your mother had a stroke.” Those words changed my life, maybe not for the better, but they changed quite a bit. Instead of finishing the semester and getting my degree, I went home to take care of my mother. The stroke left her unable to walk, to talk, and so I had to help her do everything. I was willing to do it at first, we never had the best relationship, but she was my mother so I owed it to her.
