Horrors of the Deep
I’m a marine biologist, and I work in the Hatinggabi aquarium, the world’s first aquarium capable of simulating conditions in the midnight zone. For those who don’t know, the ocean is organized in three sections: the daylight zone, the twilight zone, and the midnight zone. The daylight zone is at the top, it receives the most light and is the easiest to study. Below that is the twilight zone; with significantly less light and more pressure, it requires specialized equipment to explore.

Earsplitting
Work Release isn't like an ordinary prison. If you're unfamiliar with how the prison hierarchy works, let me explain. You have Maximum Security institutions, places with barbed wire on the fences, and men in cages inside concrete structures, whose days are basically dictated by the guards' will. Then you have Minimum Security, which is mostly dorms that look like summer camp cabins, with bunk beds, belongings stacked neatly in lockers, and Inmates who have a schedule and go about their day as they choose, within reason. Then there's Community Custody, which is more like a halfway house. Inmates living in Community Custody have jobs outside the facility, earn their own money, and get to wear regular clothes most of the time. They have one foot in the real world and usually cause very little trouble.

The Boy in the Mirror
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but tonight, a candle burned in the window. The glow of its flame attracted insects to the glass, but there were no other creatures who took heed, save the woman sitting silently in the upstairs bedroom.

The Nevajo Skin-walkers- Why Americans Are Afraid Of Them
Traditions claim that skinwalkers were formerly healers and medicine men who became corrupted by their own power and turned evil. It's also been said that breaching tribal taboos and committing social offenses can turn anyone into a Skinwalker.

The Fairest of them All
So... here we are again. I do hope you're enjoying these dark, macabre tales from the Realm of "What if...?", because I so enjoy telling them. Here is another that you may be familiar with, a tale as old almost as the concept of the Fairytale itself: it involves a lovely young maiden, a jealous, vain queen... and, of all things, an apple.

The Octopus
Traditionally, we humans have placed ourselves at the far right of the intelligence bell curve. Not just that, but we tend to claim we're the only ones there. Pigs, elephants, a couple breeds of dogs might fall somewhere near the middle, but when it comes to smarts, we've just gone and declared ourselves the cream of the crop. I've always thought that was a bit self-important.

The Tapping From Inside
I was having lunch with Mark when an unfamiliar face came to sit with us. He wore a lab coat, gray scrubs, and a badge identifying him as Morgue staff. Mark extended his fist for the newcomer to bump and made instructions as I covertly slid my salad back a little bit.

Top of the Charts. Runner-Up in The Mystery Box Challenge.
Have you ever looked at the liner notes on a CD? Maybe you were on a road trip, bored of watching endless stretches of farmland roll by your window and you needed something to distract you. Maybe you're one of those rare people who gets curious about who and what goes into making a record and you decided to find out. If either of those apply to you, there's a chance you might have seen my name. You wouldn't remember it, of course. Just a handful of tiny black letters populating one of those overcrowded blocks of text, tucked away in the liner notes of an album. "Blake Mickens: bass guitar on tracks 2, 7, and 12." "Martin Aubuchon: drums and percussion on tracks 3 and 11." "Special thanks to Chloe Hall, Calvin Hawkins, Jorge Dominguez and Sylvia Adzoh." If you pick up the right record, I'm somewhere in there.
