The Cost of 20k
A firm knock at my hotel door jolted me out of my video game trance. It really didn’t help that the video game I was playing was of the horror variety. I stood up, my legs and back cracked and popped as I moved them for the first time in hours. My eyes burned as I rubbed them. The moisture having all but depleted from going so long without blinking. I wandered to the door and looked through the peep hole.

The Truth Nobody Could Know
The thunder is really loud again. I woke up to the house shaking. The lightning was so bright that I could see outside clear as day. Maybe a glass of water will calm my nerves. It must’ve worked as I woke in my bed confused. The birds were chirping so beautifully. I stood against my window with my daily coffee when I saw a mysterious man creeping around the neighborhood corner. He was dressed in a murky gray sweatshirt and black skin tight jeans. I didn’t recognize him and tried to get a closer look.

Lucky Lucy
He sat there, feverish and surrounded in his own blood, back pressed awkwardly against the hotel wall. Panic sounded out in the form of his frantic, laboured breaths that echoed throughout the small hallway. He clawed at his neck as bile rose in his throat. He vomited again. The carpet stained crimson.

Brute of the Tree
Slender as a branch but taller than a man, a creature of darkness hovered above a frightened American. There was no noise for an ever-lasting period before a scream of terror shoves out into the wind to blow away. Before the screams could even leave him, he was begging and leading the creature to his camp.

The Payment Forward
Part 1: The Package It all started with one of those special mornings. Missing shoes, spilt coffee, lost keys; it just kept coming. I was in such a hurry to leave the house, not knowing what was waiting for me on the outside of my door. Just what I needed; the ever dreaded, eviction notice. I couldn't believe what was happening! I lost my job a week before this, along with my long-term boyfriend. Nothing had been going my way for a while now and it seemed like I couldn’t sink any lower.

Piano Keys are Made of Bone
“Your thoughts are loud.” She said, cool grey eyes peering over her teacup. She sat in a tufted armchair that matched the rest of the house, which was seemingly out of a storybook with its grand chandeliers and cathedral ceilings, complete with perfect replicas of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. The tearoom was honestly the least grand in the whole house, and even it stood the test of time, as if you walked right into the Victorian era.

The Fall
Autumn and Josh conducted their Saturday ritual of shopping at the home and garden store. They made the trip through the country, past the farms and vineyards to the big lot of supermarkets and department stores. Josh had been gardening since their son Kyle had gone to prison. It was Josh’s coping skill, a healthy hobby suggested by their counselor. “Something that will help manage the grief and stress this ordeal has brought upon your family. Something to remind you of the many things in life that are very good.”

Crematorium
A cardboard box rested on a cart in the middle of the room with a man dressed in scrubs standing nearby. He looked in and smiled, admiring his own work. A woman lay still inside. Her complexion was vibrant through the tightly wrapped plastic sheet binding her in place. He picked up a roll of clear packing tape from the cart's utility tray and carefully closed the box, ensuring the lid fit snugly. The tape wound around the edges, sealing the woman inside. He gently placed the tape back on the utility tray for next time.
