Brute of the Tree

Hunter of the Woods

By Olivia PoloPublished 5 years ago 5 min read

Slender as a branch but taller than a man, a creature of darkness hovered above a frightened American. There was no noise for an ever-lasting period before a scream of terror shoves out into the wind to blow away. Before the screams could even leave him, he was begging and leading the creature to his camp.

The creature stayed mute as the other scramble for his valuables. Once he gathered all his riches, he left them in the hands of the being. After that, the human left into the forest, to never be seen by another human again. Yet another story in history to go against the tree being who blends with the branches.

Now the being is left with random cash and small crystals. As one with no idea how to count, they will need to bring it to one who does. The fairies have a currency system. So tomorrow they will go to visit an old pal of theirs.

As the sunrise into the golden skies, so to did the Woodlin creature. They climb down the tree to find the gathering of tiny homes. These homes are where the little fairies buzzed around to socialize and make a living. This specific community is where a dragon guards after being denied by all other creatures; only the friendly fairies loved him around. Many supernatural beings love their little gathering, but their community is a shame to those who don't understand. The loving fairies are weak, slow, and dumb compared to all others, making their survival a miracle.

"Hey! You shoved me!" The tree being heard from afar as they roam into the protected area. It did not take long until another one flies over to apologize and explain his rush.

"Onche!" An elder fairy walks over to the tree being. "What are you doing here." The elder questions him. The elder is tall compared to all the other fairies. Hinting that his past was a guardian waiting for when needed. Whether he was useful in a fight or not, Onche does not know. They have only known the, now merchant, as an elder.

Onche unravels their arms to show the riches they have from the human. "I got this," They answer, then the faires chuckles as he brings them to his home. His home was not small like all the other homes. As a guardian, he was too big to fit in all the other resting areas. He was made a special one to live and sleep.

"So, who did you scare this time?" The elder interviewed, gathering a shrug in return. After hinting to Onche to lay the items down, the elder begins to search through to organize and then count. Within a few minutes, he ends up with the answer to Onche curiosity.

"It would be 20,000 dollars. 16432.88 Euros." The elder informs the tree being. Though seeing the blank face of Onche, he decided it is best to give them a different currency. "About 5000 boxes of granola bars,"

"5000!" Onche repeats in surprise. It was the first time the elder heard them get so loud about anything. Even louder than when that fairy was in danger. "No, 5000 boxes, not 5000!" He begins to ramble, impressed by the amount. They soon hordes the riches back into their long arms to hide and leaves. Not meaning to be rude, but never much for talking.

Returning to their home, they begin to wander around in their thoughts. They asked questions such as "how can I buy something from the humans?" and "Should I only get granola bars or something else?" Eventually, They made a plan. First, however, they know they'll need to find another human. Humans have technology with them all the time. They contact other humans but without the downfall of them knowing the face of the other person. With this, They can ask for help through the problem. Many will send things to one another. So they can ask for a volunteer!

It took them another week of unbearable waiting until another human camped in their woods. This camper was a stubborn Asian, most likely with a rough past. Onche's best guess was that he had a military record. People like this tend to be more for a fight than others. He had no family or pets with him. Which doesn't happen too often, but lately has.

Closer to midnight, Onche begins their plans. Sneaking around the base of the camp, they wait for a moment to "hunt." They allowed him to become comfortable because humans get more scared when betrayed by life. Once he was warm by the fireplace cooking marshmallows, Onche begins to sneak into the scene from behind. They creaked by without a sound, lifting their hand to strick. Though, they miss on purpose before squealing a terrible noise. The noise was like a whistle screaming in desperation.

The act gains the man's attention, jumping up and away to get his gun. Though seeing it was the beast from afar, he did not think he'd have a chance against it. So he ran, and the brute of the trees follows and tears his clothing. Leaving Onche what they wanted, the phone that was in his pockets.

They left the Asian to return to society. An uncommon situation, as those who see them neglect themselves and wonder in the woods. Onche accepted one running and returning home. So they return to the now-abandoned campsite and take what they wish; once done, they get rid of the fire. They don't want their woods destroyed anytime soon.

Now honestly, Onche is not one of intelligence. They are, by Dr. Baraj's definition, a beast. Being a beast in his descriptions is mostly uncaring and unintelligent. They often are more likely to power their way through a problem instead of finding a tranquil fit. Some like Onche and a few others will use tricks instead but still will not peacefully face issues.

With this in mind, the beast found out their way to his precious granola bars. It was easier than they formerly expected. They spent hours trying to find a way before finding businesses that deliver. Afterward, Onche was slightly irritated by their struggles from before figuring that out. Though either way, that does not matter. Now they will have their reward.

Onche was happy a few months. Though after, they get sick. The continuous meal almost made them throw up. After that, they needed a break and return to eating their boxes upon boxes of granola bars after ten months. Though when that happens, it was stale and disgusting. They didn't understand before grabbing a little black book. The black notebook was only a few inches long and a few inches wide. They write down the experience and return to the fairies.

"They expire, you know?" The elder tells them. The other creature looks at them with sad eyes before taking their note and leaving back home to try the granola bars again and again. Eventually, they return to their life. It is the start of a repetitive story. He finds a human, takes the money, and buys granola bars.
