Luciferase
Doctor Anastasia Hendrikson sighed slowly as yet another specimen wilted and died under the experiment. She pushed herself away from the table, rubbed her eyes slowly and stared at the computer screen. Why wasn’t the program working? It has been years since she first started the experiments on the bioluminescent fungi Mycena luxaeterna, also known as the ‘Eternal Light Mushroom’. However none of the experiments has born any success, and it already cost her her marriage and a relationship with her daughter.

Party of a Lifetime
I still can’t believe I am here, thought Melanie to herself. There she was on an exotic remote island far from home with a large group of people, partying the night away. It was like a dream. Like most of the world she had been stuck at home and away from her family and friends for months due to the COVID outbreak of 2020. In spite of stay at home orders, she was managed to sneak out and meet up with small groups of friends without any complications with law enforcements or becoming a victim of COVID herself. However, she still missed the concert vibe, that feeling of being with one collective whole group experiencing the same event. With COVID cases on the rise again, she knew it would be a matter of time before local governments would shut everything down again.

The Secret of Arkcroft Manor
"Come, Brother!" Joseph's familiar voice called out yet again, ringing with almost childlike exuberance. "Come and see!" To any rational, outside observer, this alone would seem an innocuous request, harmlessly echoing down the well-polished halls of Arkcroft Manor. Even when considering the absurdly early hour of the day, the words themselves did little to raise cause for alarm, and yet, warded off in the upstairs' master bedroom, a pool of cold sweat accumulated beneath Niklaus' sleep-deprived body all the same. Despite being draped in all manner of finery, beneath his canopy of mahogany and silks, the lord of Arkcroft, Niklaus Croft, appeared as death itself, his ribs protruding, cheeks hollow, and eyes sunken.

Green Light Decisions
The glow of the green light swells in the small, dark room around me. Reaching fingers coax the shadows from the dank corners and paints the walls with the sickly hue. The room is alive with the color green. Breathing steadily and watching me intently, the walls rise around me like a judgmental wave waiting to drown me in its depths.

Red Light, Green Light
I come from a shitty little town with not much to do. The best thing about it is the 'you are now leaving' sign. Unemployment and drinking problems are rife. I'm telling you this so you can appreciate that me and my friends were typical dumb teenagers who were also bored and that's why we started playing the game. I'm sure you've heard of it, it's called red light, green light. It has a few different names depending on where you are in the world but it's played the same way, one of you has your back to the others while they try to sneak up and touch you to take your place but if you turn around everyone has to stop and stand perfectly still. If anyone moves while you're looking they're out. It's the sort of silly game that most people leave behind when they're about ten.
