Pool in the Desert
I've lived in the desert for a long time so the only time I see water is when the rains come. So you can imagine my surprise when I stepped out of my home one morning during the dry season to find a pool of water ten feet away from my front door. I knew there had no reason last night and yet right here in front of me was a pool of water. It didn't make any sense. My dog who had been behind me pushed his way past my legs to go jump in the pool and when he did he simply disappeared.

Dead Lake
1. Most people agreed that when little Jimmy Cutter died, the town of Stonefield died, too. Of course, it took some time before most of them realized it. Jimmy’s family had been part of the town since its inception and had been responsible for much of its wealth. Following the death of their only son, they moved out of state, taking their business with them. The town never recovered.

In the Deeps
I nearly drowned two weeks ago, and it changed my life. My family moved out to Mercy Shore recently. It's a little peninsula town in Washington with two hardware stores, a Walmart, and not much else. Mom and Dad grew up in San Diego amongst the hustle and bustle of city life and decided they wanted to retire somewhere a little quieter. I had been their last child, a total surprise to both of them at forty. Now that they were fifty-five, they felt it was time to retire and enjoy their golden years.

Afraid of water?…
I was anchored in the middle of nowhere. I had been hired by a faceless corporation to perform a specific task. Without breaching confidentiality, I can tell you that I was to sail out to a given location in the Pacific Ocean, dive down to the bottom and document whatever was down there.

The Lake House
The night air seemed to bite at my exposed flesh. I had no idea why my mother brought us to this lake house so suddenly. It was because her haste to leave the comfort of our two-story California house that I was grossly under packeted for the chilly autumn climate of South Dakota. There was no explanation for the trip or why we had to leave so quickly. Every time I would ask, mom would simply say it was about time, she took us on a family vacation. Never mind that we were in the middle of the school year, and it was almost Halloween. I was supposed to go to a Halloween party with all my friends, but I didn’t even get to tell him goodbye before I was thrown into our car whisked away to the middle of nowhere.

The Girl by the Lake
I was running the first time I saw her. I decided to take a different route and there she was, staring out at the water almost in a trance. I doubt she would have noticed me but I waved an said “Hi” so as not to spook her. It was still early in the morning. The mist was hovering over the lake and she almost looked like a phantom in the early morning light.

The Spider in the Car
Driving home from the first day at his new job, the Gurdies’ man felt content with himself. Looking at himself in his rear-view mirror, he was satisfied to see that his hair still hadn’t ruffled and his collar was still in place and tidy. He laughed, recalling how much he worried about whether or not he would fit in with his co-workers, whether or not they would like and accept him. Stupid superficial shit. It all worked out - thank god - he thought to himself. There was even a woman at work who seemed to be eyeing him a lot, smiling and looking away whenever he returned her gaze. The Gurdies’ man blushed thinking about it.
