The dark-haired cop’s name plate read “Haley.” The other cop, Blondie, was one of those that wouldn’t let a big man get close enough to read his name. Haley crowded past me toward the kitchen table and picked up the photo I’d been looking at. He couldn’t have missed it in the thin winter sunlight leaking through the windows: Marie, sitting on the beach as the sun set behind the broken clouds, closing like Smaug’s eye above the breakwater. The light in that photo, nearly two thousand miles south and ten years on, still hurt the eyes.

The Lake
To begin with, my grandmother had died of a stroke over a year ago. My girlfriend, Adeline, had been amazing during this painful time. She was patient and kind, holding my hand through it all. My grandmother had loved Adeline and accepted our relationship from the very beginning, never questioning us or our love for each other. My great-uncle had committed suicide when my grandmother was young because of shame for his sexuality. So when my grandmother had realized mine (claiming to have known I was a lesbian since I was 8-years-old), she became a pillar of acceptance for me.

Behind Blue Eyes. Top Story - October 2021.
I was born on January 21, 2057. I was told that the doctor almost dropped me at first glance. It wasn't because I didn’t cry as most babies do at birth. It was because I look albino, with light skin and white hair, except my eyes are pale blue. I never met my dad.

Decoding the Secret of the Sudden death of a Young Medical Student in a Riverside Dormitory
Yousuf Ali, a first-year medical student at Welfare Medical School situated in the suburbs from the center of the city, decided a few days ago to leave his privately rented room in the city hostel and move to the general student dormitory. He did not have too many belongings; just a bag containing all his clothes, a wooden bed with other necessary things like pillows, bed sheets, blanket and so on. He hired a local van at a cheap rate to transfer all these to the main building which was a little bit distant from the main campus and near the riverbank. There were a lot of trees all around and so were the chirpings of birds. The columns of trees were so thick that it remained cloudy and dark even in the broad daylight. The mighty Padma river added something more to the serenity of the whole area. Every afternoon, a huge number of city folks used to visit the riverbanks and disappear just before the evening when the hell of utter silence engulfs the whole area. As the area is located a bit far away from the main city, very few people are found to be roaming around in the area during the afternoon and through the night. During the rainy season, the river used to turn into a devastating and fierce one which seemed to destroy the only age-old embankment and flood the whole city anytime. The horrific crying sound of the waves at midnight used to create an atmosphere that nobody used to get out without any urgent necessity.

Mister Galvisi's Metamorphosis
The bioluminescent waves crashed against the boat, threatening to tear it apart with their sheer force. A little girl with green eyes and red hair leaned over the edge of the ship. The ocean was calling her name, taunting her with its secrets beneath its surface.

Monster Within
In a quiet room lay a crying young man, he was crying because he had lost the ability to move his legs. His health had been deteriorating for some time but this was the culmination of a long time battle with his health. He felt tired, betrayed by his own body, missed the outside world and all of its glory. He could hear footsteps creaking nearby softly on the wooden floor outside his room, without looking he knew it was his mother coming to comfort him. He had been so strong for so long through a long string of battling through various issues from neurological to arthritic. He had done everything that doctors could muster up, but nothing gave him relief. His mother sat beside him on his bed and bent over for a hug, holding back tears of her own and kept rubbing his back. Her long hair ran down in front of her face which she swung behind her to look at her son.

The Black Water
About three years ago I moved to this abandoned farm out in the desert all by myself. I had lost my sister before that and everything around me seemed all too much to handle. I desperately needed to get away, from people, from the city, from anything that could disrupt the silence around me.
