fiction
Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
Troubled Waters
The lake looked clear and inviting, its blue waters rippled ever so slightly as the breeze blew. It was a nice day and it was calling to Claire. She looked out at the water while she sat down on the dock deciding if she wanted to take a swim. Then she heard it, a soft cry. It didn’t sound like anything she heard before. Could be a bird or another form of wildlife she thought. She shrugged her shoulders and stared back across the water. Claire sat there for a while, she didn’t even know what time it was when she stood to leave. She walked back across the dock and heard the cry again, this time it sounded urgent. Claire looked around trying to see where the noise came from when she heard it for the third time. It sounded like it was coming from the waters edge near the trees. She walked over to get a closer look and she saw a flash of yellow eyes near the water. She stood hesitant for a moment then decided to go see what was making the noise.

SHADOWCREEK HIGH
Truth or Dare "I mean, I'm still wearing a towel, so technically I'm not naked. The post already has 36likes ... let's refresh one more time." Considering the fact that only about 15,000 people lived in this town, it's fair to say that 36 likes on a picture mean that you are not a nobody. Saige looked outside. A store owner on the other side of the street was busy putting up Halloween decorations: Skeleton body parts and fake spiderwebs. Saige thought to herself: "This is ridiculous." She opened up the app one more time and deleted the post just when the piercing sound of the tiny doorbell rang. Ava, Saige's best friend, came strolling into the small Starbucks in the main intersection at the small city center.

Gertrudes Baddest Ever Day
Gertrude was having a very, very bad day. It was easily the worst since she had found her mother’s dead body lying on the bathroom floor, Mom’s hand still holding Daddy’s razor. The image haunted her even now after nearly three years. Since then every day had been a bad day but this day was the baddest.

The Cabin
I watched the fog roll over the lake bed a few yards away from the cabin door, my heart racing faster the less I could see on the other side. I took a deep breath and stepped outside on the rickety front stoop and took a quick look around, noticing the fog wasn't just rolling in over the lake. Something wasn't right about this fog. This thick, hazy mist.

Slack Tide
Jake and Tess pulled off the ferry onto Keiser Island’s main road. They coasted through town at a perfunctory twenty-five miles an hour, passing diagonally parked cars. Tess rested her hand on Jake’s thigh. They passed the Fraternity Village general store, the Methodist Church, the post office, a tiny grocery store, and an even tinier police and fire department.

All Saints in the Shallows
Weathered faces made of dampened wood and bleached stone stared silently from the water toward the shore. They never moved or spoke, and no one ever assumed they would. The only sound that could be heard around them was the lapping water and the blustery wind from old and cold Lake Vern. But sometimes, the wind carried a voice that many called the chant of the Water-Saints.

Trick or Tweet 2021
This past October, I joined in on the fun challenge of creating a tweet sized horror story each day, posted with the hashtag #trickortweet2021. I missed a couple of days but kept it up all month long. As I wrote, I imagined them all being connected, so I decided to collect them here to read all together. Enjoy!

Voices of the Lagoon
Late Morning/Early Afternoon Manuel looked to the distance as the waves crashed alongside his boat. He stood at the bow holding tight to the rope of the sail. His friend David was in the cockpit, directing the ship to Manuel’s gestures. The sky was clouding, and they were a good distance from any shore. The had lost sight of any land more than an hour ago, but David had sense enough to know the way back. It was more the possible storm in near open water that worried him. Not for the first time on this trip did David regret agreeing to help Manuel.

Shallow Waters, Deep Secrets
Jen walked the beach every sunset no matter what the weather was. She loved her freedom. Even when the wind screeched in her ears and sandblasted her skin, she always felt renewed. She stopped each night at the spot on the beach where pebbles gathered in a pile. Jen gazed out at the horizon and whispered into the wind, “Pierre, let the fish dissolve you and your sins, and may you rot in hell.”
