Carter's Crypt
"The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window." The camera recording the speaker panned over to the secluded cabin. The building was old. Shingles were missing, logs were covered in vines, and cobwebs hung in the corners like streamers.

An Atrocity of Oddities
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It didn’t burn for long. Witnesses, and there were not many save for a few errant teenagers testing their boundaries in the forest that night, claim that the candle flickered for only a minute before being snuffed out. One girl claimed she saw a pair of thin, cracking lips beside it, blowing the flame out.

Sins of the Past
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. I wasn’t supposed to be here, no one was supposed to be here. The cabin had been condemned ever since I was a boy living in the trailer park down at the bottom of the hill the cabin overlooks. Yet here I was, at the end of a long hallway illuminated only by the sole flickering candle on the windowsill where the hall opened into a large room. I took a hesitant step forward, the floorboards groaned under the weight of my bare feet, shattering the silence of the moment. I hesitated, my heart beating against the skin of my chest, my breath shaky and broken as I strained, listening for anything or anyone else. All was quiet.

The Lonely Cabin. Runner-Up in Campfire Ghost Story Challenge.
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Jack had hiked for so long that all thoughts of danger were pushed from his mind. Three months on the Appalachian Trail was hard enough on the body, but no one ever talked about the toll it took on the spirit. The human soul wasn’t meant to be alone for so long. As darkness descended and the creatures began their nightly songs, the candle beckoned him in like an old friend with the promises of hearth and home. Both were much needed after a week of cold rain and three months spent sleeping on the hard ground. Not to mention the thought of some company.

The Cabin
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The surrounding town refused to talk about what happened there, but the urban legends were still able to live on through kids and teens. Some will tell you a man and his brothers were on a hunting trip in the 1960s when he went crazy and shot everyone then himself. Others will say that it was a newlywed couple on their honeymoon when a deranged stranger broke in and tortured them for hours before their merciful deaths.

The Old Haunted Cabin
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The cabin was thousands of years old, and it was well known that spooky events always took place there. Every night, there would be a deep mist appeared around the cabin and screams of terror would fill the air. There would be tapping on the windows, and loud banging on the walls that would cause the cabin to shake.

Who's There? - A Short Story of Mystery, Crime, and Fiction
“Who’s there?” The answer was the clicking of a light switching on and off, and the wind gushing through the broken window. The light above swayed in the wind creating eerie shadows against the walls as the light flickered at a steady pace. A trembling sigh escaped the girl, her voice echoing in the empty building. She could have sworn she heard someone or something move. Her hands couldn’t stop shaking. The stone walls around her were stained with brown splatters. She couldn’t tell if it were simply dirt or blood. She ignored the logical side which told her it was blood; she didn’t want to believe it. Her footsteps echoed throughout the hall, forming a rhythm with the creaking lights.
