A Minor Man
He's sitting in a booth at a diner. He's wearing a black t-shirt with blue jeans and a pair of black Converse. The waitress approaches him with a pot of coffee and asks, "More coffee for you, darlin'?" The man nods and smiles. He nudges his cup to her. She pours some coffee for him. The man says, "Thank you, beautiful," as he winks at her while she leaves his booth.

Lazarus
Chapter 1: Elizabeth My parents always knew that the world would come to an end. Men and women would be tested, but never once did I think it would happen like this. It was the year 2017 and they passed away, I was only 19. My brother was 16 and it was my job to take care of him now.

Talking to Jack
Tonight, was a night like no other. Tonight, was the night we first spoke. His lips opened but nothing came out. An agonising silence fell over the room as he looked me up and down. Finally, he licked his lips seductively and inclined his head towards the floor. I think that means I’m in. His mouth closed slowly without uttering a single word. My heart stopped. Is this how he would inform me that I’m acceptable? Moments passed that felt like years. I could feel myself aging in anticipation of what would happen next. I don’t know what the protocol is here. Do I shake his hand or do I give him space? Whatever I do, I don’t want him to know that I am nervous!

Hammer, Pick, & Plaster
It was 24 hours later that she did begin to feel the pain in her head and the scars on her face. A hard cast placed in a tight triangle around a bone that had been broken and drilled soft. The array of colors her undereye turned began with a purplish black. Deep red filled the dripping gauze the first 48 hours. Bags of fluid of the pools of blood accumulated not only on her undereye but puffed out her eyelids. It was difficult to see from blurry vision and heavy lids that didn’t even open under the weight in the lying position she remained in. The discoloration traveled like a thick eyeliner and split over the crease of the entire eye. The frequent naps were interrupted by ice compresses and doses of Oxycontin.

Whispers in the Trees
Crisp leaves crinkled under the heavy work boots clad on Emona’s tired feet. Taking time off to mourn was something she wasn’t used to. Not even the scenery given to her by the beautiful fall Appalachian Trail seemed to help. Sighing, she adjusted the purple scrunchy in her curly dark brown hair and rubbed her face exhaustedly. Everything reminded her of death; the nearly bare trees, the cold air that made her dark skin rise with goosebumps, and the ground decorated with the scattered brown and yellow corpses. The land had lost the once vibrant and adventurous vibe it used to give the two of them.

Gentle Breeze
The gentle breeze from the open window awakened her from a troubled sleep. Andrea looked over at her husband’s slumbering silhouette and wondered if he had suspected that she was the unknown assailant that every local television station had been prattling on about. She never meant to kill him. It all started out innocently enough. Well… not really innocent, per se. Hell, husbands and boyfriends go out looking for "strange" all the time. Why couldn't she get a little male companionship on the side? Andrea fought to suppress a shiver as she played back the whole sordid event in her mind.

Kidnapped by Killers
It was a cold November night and The Maestraums had just settled in for a peaceful night's rest. Everything was quiet, say for a few creaks and squeaks from the old house—but the Maestraums had gotten used to that. Their house had always been rather noisy, to say the least. The couple slept almost too soundly, completely unaware of the presence just outside of their room.
