Restless Spirits In Greece
Haunted places on Crete and in the capital, Athens

Tortured Spirits
Ano Lehonia is a lovely, quiet village where you'll find Villa Kazouli. The mansion was built in 1910 for Russian Ambassador Nikolas Kontos. Spirits are restless here according to legends surrounding the strange deaths of the Kontos children. Supposedly a dead lizard fell into the milk jub and the children were poisoned when they drank the milk. The house became headquarters for the Nazis in 1941 and many Greek rebels were tortured and killed in the basement. As a result, their tortured spirits got trapped in this world and at night strange noises can be heard and by the windows silhouettes can be seen.
The Ghosts of the Greek Island of Crete

Cretan Soldier Ghosts
Frangocastello is a haunted castle on the lovely island of Crete. The castle is supposedly haunted by Drosoulites, the ghosts of Cretan soldiers who fought at the fortress against the Turks during the War of Independence. People have seen human-like shadows at the beach and other visitors have seen figures heading toward the castle. There have been reports of kidnappings and other inexplicable occurrences. Legend has it that dead soldiers haunt Frangocastello and the surrounding since they never received a proper burial.

Swimming Fairy
Legend tells the tale of a fairy that swims underwater in Lake Kournas located outside of Chania in Crete. The tale is a sad one about a lovely woman who came to the lake with a friend. Strangely her companion attempted to attack her as soon as he saw her shining golden hair sparkling in the Greek sun. This so frightened the woman that she asked divine spirits to turn her into a water fairy so she could escape him. Her wish was granted and since that time she lives in the lake as a water fairy. At night it is possible to see her as she steps out of the lake to wash her hair beneath a starry sky.

The Fairy Caves
Just outside of Heraklion in Crete are the famous fairy caves. They can be found deep in the forest and are protects by the river that passes through the area. The fairies of Crete make the caves their home. There are many curious who would like to see the fairies but supposedly one must be cautious because it is said that those who meet the fairies lose their voice forever so they cannot tell anyone about this magical meeting. From afar the fairies can be heard singing songs with enchanting voices.
Athens

Old Sanatorium
At Mount Parnitha stands the abandoned Parnitha Sanatorium that was built in 1917 to treat tuberculosis patients but more than 50 per cent of the patients died within five years. It is not far from downtown Athens. Once the sanatorium closed in the 1960s renovations made it into the Xenia Hotel. However, the hotel could not beat the competition from the Mount Parnes Hotel and Casino and closed its doors. In the 1980s the sanatorium became home to the School of Tourism Professionals. Today the building remains empty and visitors who come to look at it have notice changes in temperature and heard strange noises and voices. Some have even seen a little girl who cries and asks for water.

Across from the haunted sanitorium is The Park of Souls that was created by artist Spyridon Dassiotis in 2017 in memory of the deceased whose souls emerged from the wood with tragic expressions after a big fire on the mountain in 2007. The artist made use of the burnt tree trunks from the tragedy.

Wreath Bearer Still At Work
The First Cemetery of Athens was built in 1837 and is the final resting place of revolutionary heroes, actors, poets, politicians, and important figures of society and the church. The cemetery is located behind the Panathenaic Stadium and is open to the public. It is an amazing cemetery with many impressive sculptures. A mysterious atmosphere falls over it at night when the resident ghost Nikolas Batsaris comes out to roam. He was a wreath bearer working at the cemetery. He can be seen by visitors sitting by a wreath. Another spooky spot is by Logginos Hill that overlooks the cemetery and is the final resting place of German soldiers.
