Inside movie review 2023

Thriller experience film must watch 👌👌👍

The film "Inside" has a fascinating premise that could have been executed by any skilled director, but unfortunately, Vasilis Katsoupis, the film’s director, was not up to the task. The result is a movie that falls short of expectations and leaves viewers unsatisfied, much like the protagonist Nemo, whose misfortunes we witness for the previous 105 minutes. Nemo is an art thief, and the story begins with him being dropped off at a huge New York penthouse apartment. After he steals most of the paintings he's there for, the security system malfunctions and locks him in. He is now stranded with little food, no water, and no way out.

The apartment is filled with priceless works of art and various objects, but it seems uninhabited. The fridge is empty, and there is no working stove, but there is a pool and an indoor garden. Nemo realizes he is in for a long time, but he doesn't lose hope. He devises a plan to escape by constructing a tower out of furniture and climbing to the skylight. In his idle time, he entertains himself by staging fake cooking shows and creating stories about the other residents he can see on security cameras.

The filmmakers behind "Inside" missed a golden opportunity to craft a film that would have been a success in the hands of any number of other directors. For example, Jerry Lewis could have transformed it into an outstanding piece of sustained slapstick, reducing the apartment to shambles while trying to escape. Alternatively, the film could have been an existential horror movie directed by Michael Haneke, exploring the value of art. Finally, the late Larry Cohen, famous for his films with daring concepts, could have created a movie that includes sociological commentary about the worth of art.

Katsoupis failed to infuse the narrative with anything of substance, making "Inside" an exercise in cruelty. The individual moments are darkly funny, but they don't come together to form a cohesive story. While the conclusion may have been meant to be symbolic, it is likely to disappoint viewers.

Despite the film's shortcomings, Willem Dafoe delivers an excellent performance as Nemo. He is captivating as he goes on an inner journey from despair to resignation to a form of grace. However, casting a more laid-back actor like George Clooney may have been more effective in conveying Nemo's descent into savagery.

In conclusion, "Inside" is a missed opportunity. The premise is intriguing, but the execution falls short of expectations. With better direction, the film could have been a success. However, it is worth watching for Dafoe's outstanding performance.
