Red light, green light.

Invisible speakers clicked on.

“Welcome my trients to your first game. Red light, green light. The rules are simple. When the light is red you don’t move. When it’s green you run to the finish. Only 20 trients can finish the game. If you move when the light is red you’ll be eliminated. Have fun!

Ready,

set,

GO!”

The light turned on. I hesitated. It wasn’t green it was red. That monster!, I thought to myself. At least three people jerked forward but when they saw it was red they froze. Three bullets flew past my ear . All three of them laid on the floor, a bullet hole right in their back where their heart should be. I glance behind me. The keepers were slowly walking towards us. This would make it even more difficult having to focus on them and the light.

When the light turned green I sprinted forward as fast as I could. When it turned red I stopped in my tracks. I almost lost my balance. My heart skipped a few beats. I heard two or three people fall behind me, stumbling over the floor, and then gunshots. Blood splattered on the floor next to me. I started feeling nauseous but shook myself. I couldn’t gets sick in the middle of a life or death situation.

The light turned green again a little faster than it did last time. At least four people ran past me. It turned red again,a few more gunshots. I assumed it would keep on doing this faster and faster. I looked behind me and, I saw the keepers still slowly walking towards us.

When it turned green I kept on running. At least five people had made it past the finish line so far and one of them was the blonde hair girl I was standing next to earlier. Everyone was too scared to talk but she seemed to be mouthing, Come on come on you can do it! ,and she kept on making hand motions as if hurrying us on.

This time when the light turned red I only heard a few gunshots but when the light turned green again I kept hearing people falling. I thought to myself, Why are they still killing people? I looked behind me and realize that the keepers had knives. If they got close to you they would kill you. So you wouldn’t scuffle along and make the game endless.

There were at least 15 dead bodies behind me and one in front of me. 10 people were already at the finish line. The light turned green. I ran and ran and ran but people still passed me. Somehow I was slowing down. The light turned red. Even when the light was red ,and the keepers are coming, the trients didn’t care what color it was they just ran off towards the finish.

Then there was only two of us. The Finishline still seem so very far away. It was me and a redheaded woman in her 30s. With one look at her I assumed she was a mother of children. I decided that I would go slower and let her win since there was 19 people passed the finish line now. When the light turned green I purposefully slowed down. She looked behind herself and realized what I was doing. Her eyes were full of thankfulness.

I mouthed the words Your welcome. I try to glance behind me but I hear crash in front of me ,and a gunshot. Without knowing, she tripped over one of the dead bodies in front of her and got shot. I stared at her. When the light turned green I ran, the finish line getting closer and closer. Red,green, red, green. I tried my best to avoid the dead bodies and avoid the keepers. Going and going and going. Red light, green light, red light, green light.

I was close now. The people at the finish line were yelling at me to hurry. Soon I could feel the keepers breathing down my neck.

Then I tripped.

And fell.

Over the finish line.

The others cheered and the blonde haired girl lifted me up. The keepers were right at the edge of the finish line now. I would’ve been a goner if the light turned red. The keepers turned around, I was wondering what they were doing, and they started firing their guns. I realized that the people who were laying on the floor already with gunshots or knives in their backs weren’t all the way dead, so they were just finishing them off.

Monsters. That was the only word to describe them.

“Good job my trients!” The voice spoke.” I’m excited to see how you do next round! Also your first rare prize for winning the first round is a small token of survival.”
