🌾 The Wise Farmer
A tale of wisdom, patience, and sustainable farming

The Wise Farmer
Once upon a time, in a small village named Rampur in India, there lived a farmer named Ramu. Like most farmers, Ramu was not wealthy. However, he possessed something rare — wisdom and foresight. Though he owned only two acres of land, he made enough from it to surprise all the other farmers in the village.
Ramu would wake up before dawn, walk around his fields, observe the soil, look at the sky, and then make decisions based on his experience and knowledge. His goal was not just to feed his family but to take care of the land and improve it with each passing year.
Most of the farmers in the village planted only one crop — rice. The region had ample water, and rice gave a quick return, so no one experimented. But Ramu thought differently. He believed that planting rice every year would gradually exhaust the soil. So, he decided to diversify — sometimes growing millet, sometimes vegetables, and sometimes pulses.
People laughed at him in the beginning.
"Ramu has gone crazy!" they would say. "He’s growing vegetables instead of rice!"
But within a few years, they began to see the results. Ramu’s land had become more fertile. When other farmers faced crop failure due to pests or disease, Ramu was saved because his crops were different and less vulnerable. He also planted neem and acacia trees between his fields — they protected the soil and kept harmful insects away.
One year, a severe drought hit the village. The ponds dried up, tube wells failed, and most farmers lost their crops. Many began migrating to nearby towns in search of work.
But Ramu was prepared.
Years ago, he had dug a small rainwater harvesting pond and adopted a drip irrigation system that used minimal water efficiently. While others watched their crops wither, Ramu’s farm stayed green.
That year, while most villagers were struggling to get food, Ramu had enough grain to eat and share. He began giving food to the needy without asking for money.
“If we don’t help each other in hard times, then what’s the point of being human?” he would say with a gentle smile.
News of his kindness and innovation spread across the district. The local district collector mentioned him in an official report. The following month, government officials came to Rampur to meet Ramu. They asked him:
“How do you manage to grow crops successfully every year, while others fail?”
Ramu replied modestly:
“Land is like a mother. If you take care of her, she’ll never let you sleep hungry. If we give her rest, test her soil, and don’t drown her with excess water, she will reward us with healthy crops.”
Impressed, the government declared Ramu a model farmer. Training programs were organized in his name to educate other farmers about sustainable farming. Ramu suggested that farmers should be educated, taught new techniques, and informed about government schemes that could benefit them.
In the next few years, Rampur became a role model for neighboring villages. Ramu’s wisdom, patience, and compassion didn’t just change his own fate — they transformed the destiny of the entire village.
