The Queen of Sheba, or Queen of Saba, was a powerful and wise monarch who ruled in the lands of southern Arabia or maybe Ethiopia, depending on which story you follow. She was famed far and wide for her intelligence, wealth, and beauty. Her kingdom thrived with gold, spices, and precious stones, and her people respected her deeply. But one name began to echo across the desert, catching her attention: King Solomon of Israel.
Solomon’s wisdom was legendary. It was said that he could speak with animals, resolve any dispute with uncanny fairness, and command the winds and spirits. Rumors of his glorious palace and the magnificent temple he had built for his God reached the ears of the queen, intriguing her. As a ruler herself, she was not content to believe mere stories—she wanted to see the truth for herself.
So, the Queen of Sheba prepared a grand caravan. Laden with camels bearing gold, frankincense, myrrh, and rare jewels, she traveled across the desert with her finest attendants and scholars. Her purpose was twofold: to forge diplomatic ties—and to test Solomon’s wisdom with her own riddles and questions.
When she arrived in Jerusalem, King Solomon welcomed her with royal splendor. The court of Israel marveled at the regal woman who stood before them, cloaked in finery and radiating confidence. However, what truly impressed everyone was how the two rulers came to an agreement. The queen posed riddle after riddle—questions about life, nature, philosophy, and the divine. Solomon answered each with clarity and insight, often expanding the question into deeper truths. According to one legend, she inquired about "What is the most powerful thing in the world?" Truth, for it is stronger than kings or armies,” Solomon replied. She put him through more tests, even fooling him with an illusion by placing fake flowers next to real ones and asking him to tell which ones were fake. Solomon, a wise and observant man, simply watched as the answer was revealed by a bee landing on the actual blooms. Not only was his wisdom astounding to the Queen of Sheba, but so was his kingdom's prosperity and order. She praised his God and acknowledged that Solomon’s greatness came from something higher than himself. According to the Bible (1 Kings 10), she said, “Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and set you on the throne of Israel!” She gave Solomon lavish possessions, and he gave her anything she wanted in return. The Quran's (Surah An-Naml) Islamic tradition adds another layer to the story. In this version, she is called Bilqis, and her story begins when Solomon’s hoopoe bird tells him of a distant queen who, despite her power, worships the sun. Solomon sends her a letter urging her to submit to the one God out of curiosity and concern. The queen responds with diplomacy and eventually visits Solomon, witnessing his power and miracles, including a palace with a floor of glass that she mistakes for water. Seeing his wisdom and divine connection, she converts to monotheism, embracing faith in God.
In Ethiopian legend, the story takes an even deeper turn. Their epic, the Kebra Nagast, claims the Queen of Sheba bore Solomon a son—Menelik I—after returning to her kingdom. This child, raised in Ethiopia, would later return to Israel to meet his father. Menelik is said to have brought the Ark of the Covenant back to Ethiopia, where it is believed by some to remain to this day. Thus, the Queen of Sheba becomes the matriarch of Ethiopia’s Solomonic dynasty, linking African heritage to ancient Israel.

The Queen of Sheba’s story is more than just a tale of two rulers—it is a story of curiosity, mutual respect, cultural exchange, and spiritual awakening. Whether she was an Arabian queen, an Ethiopian empress, or a figure of myth woven from many cultures, her legacy endures. Her meeting with Solomon symbolizes the power of wisdom over war, dialogue over dominance, and the shared greatness of civilizations willing to learn from one another.
To this day, she is celebrated in literature, art, and music—her name evoking mystery, majesty, and the timeless journey of a seeker in search of truth.

Made from more than two million limestone blocks, some weighing over 15 tons, the precision of its construction is still astonishing today. The pyramid shows the power and beliefs of ancient Egypt and continues to attract visitors from all over the world. It is a true symbol of human skill and vision. 2. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (Iraq) The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are famous for their beauty and clever design, though historians still debate whether they really existed. Ancient stories say King Nebuchadnezzar II built these stepped gardens for his wife, Amytis, who missed the green hills of her homeland. The gardens, described as terraces full of trees, flowers, and shrubs, appeared to float above the city. Whether real or partly mythical, they show how ancient people combined nature and architecture in extraordinary ways. 3. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia (Greece) Around 435 BCE, the sculptor Phidias created the Statue of Zeus at Olympia. This huge statue of the Greek god Zeus, seated on a throne, was over 12 meters tall and made of ivory and gold-plated bronze. It represented both artistic skill and religious devotion. Even though it was destroyed long ago, records and artistic depictions keep its memory alive, showing the Greeks’ dedication to beauty, religion, and craftsmanship. 4. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (Turkey) The Temple of Artemis, built around 550 BCE, was dedicated to the Greek goddess of the hunt and wilderness. Known for its enormous size, detailed sculptures, and beautiful design, it was rebuilt several times after destruction, reflecting its cultural importance. People traveled from across the Mediterranean to see it, making the temple a center of religion, art, and commerce. Today, its ruins still tell the story of a civilization that valued beauty and spiritual devotion. 5. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Turkey) Built between 353 and 350 BCE, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was the tomb of Mausolus and his wife Artemisia. Combining Greek, Egyptian, and Lycian styles, it stood around 45 meters tall and was decorated with intricate sculptures. Its design influenced monumental tombs for centuries. Even after earthquakes destroyed it, the Mausoleum remains a symbol of human creativity and architectural achievement. 6. The Colossus of Rhodes (Greece) The Colossus of Rhodes, built between 292 and 280 BCE, was a massive bronze statue of the sun god Helios, celebrating Rhodes’ victory over an invading army. Over 30 meters tall, it was one of the tallest statues of the ancient world. Although it only stood for 54 years before an earthquake toppled it, the Colossus became a symbol of triumph, resilience, and artistic achievement, inspiring large statues throughout history. 7. The Lighthouse of Alexandria (Egypt) The Lighthouse of Alexandria, or Pharos, was built around 280 BCE on the small island of Pharos. Standing over 100 meters tall, it served as both a landmark and a guide for sailors entering Alexandria’s busy harbor. Its elegant design combined functionality and beauty. Though earthquakes destroyed it long ago, it remains a symbol of human ingenuity and innovation in maritime engineering.
