Muay Chaiya, a captivating branch of Muay Boran, is an ancient Thai martial art that serves as a precursor to modern Muay Thai. Though its roots are believed to lie in Central Thailand, Muay Chaiya gained its fame in the Chaiya district of Surat Thani province in Southern Thailand. Celebrated for its unique techniques and strategies, this martial art boasts a rich heritage and cultural importance.

Muay Chaiya stands out for its distinctive fighting style, which incorporates a low stance, agile footwork, and a 45-degree triangular guard. Fighters are trained to seamlessly transition between stances, utilizing smooth movements and tactical positioning to outwit their opponents. Its emphasis on setting traps and responding with precision earned it the nickname "Tha Dee Chaiya", meaning "moving with grace".

The art prioritizes balance, agility, and effectiveness. Practitioners learn to maintain stability while remaining mobile, enabling them to execute powerful strikes and defend against multiple adversaries. Combining strikes using elbows, knees, punches, and kicks with grappling and locking techniques, Muay Chaiya is a versatile and comprehensive form of combat.

The origins of Muay Chaiya are intertwined with folklore and historical narratives. One popular tale recounts a period of chaos caused by a stampeding herd of elephants in a Chaiya district village. During the turmoil, a wandering monk appeared and offered to assist. Legend has it that the monk used mystical powers to shrink the elephants and trap them beneath a coconut shell. Grateful for his help, the villagers built a temple called 'Wat Thung Chab Chang' (Elephant Catching Field Temple) and invited the monk to stay.

This mysterious monk, referred to as 'Por Than Ma', became a revered figure. The name translates to "He Who Has Arrived", combining the honorific "Por Than" (Sir) and "Ma" (to arrive). Despite his anonymity, Por Than Ma was highly regarded for his magical abilities and exceptional martial arts expertise. He passed on his knowledge to the locals, including the governor and his son, contributing to the development of Muay Chaiya in the region.

Some speculate that Por Than Ma was a retired royal army general who chose to leave his previous life behind and become a wandering monk. His teachings established the foundations of Muay Chaiya, which were preserved and passed down through the generations.

Today, the legacy of Muay Chaiya and its legendary teacher, Por Than Ma, is honored at 'Wat Thung Chab Chang' by the local by mean of erecting a shrine for him. Although the temple is largely unoccupied throughout the year, it serves as a venue for religious ceremonies and a reminder of the village’s historical significance. A shrine dedicated to Por Than Ma still stands within the temple grounds, drawing visitors and martial arts enthusiasts eager to pay their respects and learn about the art’s origins.

Muay Chaiya remains a cherished cultural treasure in Thailand. Training centers and schools have emerged to preserve its traditional methods, ensuring its continuation in the modern era. Beyond its self-defense applications, Muay Chaiya exemplifies discipline, respect, and resilience, inspiring practitioners and admirers alike.

The story of Muay Chaiya provides a window into Thailand’s rich martial arts heritage and the lasting influence of its ancient traditions. From its enigmatic beginnings and legendary tales to its ongoing practice and cultural relevance, Muay Chaiya showcases the ingenuity and determination of the Thai people. Whether admired for its technical mastery or its historical significance, Muay Chaiya occupies a unique and revered place in the martial arts world.
