A Woman of Independent Means
Dear Sir, Thank you for your letter of 15th August, 1882, in which you declined my application for the position of saleswoman. I confess to feeling most disappointed at your response, as I have long held your establishment in the highest regard, and indeed have made several purchases with which I have been very pleased. I am aware that many of your girls arrive at your doors with little experience but with recommendations from gentlemen known to them, and that I carry no such recommendation with me, and it is this that has prompted me to write again in the hope that you might allow me to recommend myself.

The Stuff that Dreams Are Made of
There are two ways to profit from a gold rush. The suckers will head for the hills with their gold pans dreaming of wealth in the silt, grit, and muck of frigid streams. The thinking man will set up shop in the inevitable mining town. And sell supplies to the optimists full of piss and vinegar, too ignorant to know they are drawing to an inside straight. And thus it was when I opened for business as the sun rose on the line waiting at my store's door.

February 12th in the year of our Lord 1554
February 12th in the year of our Lord 1554 For a few days, I have not been able to sleep. My wife's hand squeezes my arm gently during the night to let me know she is struggling to come to terms with this day to come. As I climb from my bed, her eyes throw shafts of sympathy to me through the gloom. If not me – who? So, well before daybreak, I leave the house and make my slow and painful journey to the Tower.

My Life in the Georgian Era
What a day! I'm exhausted. If I look at one more number I will scream! After finally finishing the books of 5 clients my boss expects me to finish 6 more. I don't know if I have it in me. My brain is fried. I'm only working at 65%...70 on a good day. Sometimes I feel like this isn't my life. Sometimes I feel like I don't belong in this 'rat race'. All I do is wake up, go to work and come home exhausted and pass out only to wake up the next morning to do it all over again. I'm not living. I'm existing.
