February 12th in the year of our Lord 1554
February 12th in the year of our Lord 1554 For a few days, I have not been able to sleep. My wife's hand squeezes my arm gently during the night to let me know she is struggling to come to terms with this day to come. As I climb from my bed, her eyes throw shafts of sympathy to me through the gloom. If not me – who? So, well before daybreak, I leave the house and make my slow and painful journey to the Tower.

A Pleasing Life
A Pleasing Life Swimming through syrup It was several days before Helen came to the realization that had metamorphosed into a spirit. It was not a moment of epiphany, just a slow creeping feeling of warmth; a heat that comforted and coddled her spirit. She felt settled and comfortable in her new form and gradually, over the course of several weeks, the passing of time added more sense to her being.

Cinnamon rock cakes in a time of unrest
Cinnamon rock cakes in a time of unrest These are terrible times with only twenty years left until the end of another century. I doubt my daughter and I will survive much longer. Central Control has reduced the island's population to fifteen million and they are finding it harder than they imagined keeping a cap on that figure. There are rumours of another cull like the one in '71. Our only hope is to keep moving but the fight within me is diminishing. With each day, my resistance ebbs away and I wonder if life can get any tougher.
