Putin accused of breaching own truce as brief pause to fighting in Ukraine ends
Ukraine accused Russia of violating the Easter truce, which Russian President Vladimir Putin abruptly declared on Saturday. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, accused Putin of being merely interested in publicity.
Putin made the unexpected announcement on Saturday that he had directed his troops to “stop all military activity” from 6 p.m. Moscow time (11 a.m. ET) to midnight on Sunday and Monday (5 p.m. Sunday ET).
Russia was encouraged to prolong the truce by Ukrainian leaders. However, there was no indication that Russia would extend the deadline.
According to the Russian state news agency TASS, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated earlier on Sunday that Putin had not issued an order to prolong the temporary Easter ceasefire past the originally declared period.
While there was a slight lull in fighting over night, Ukrainian officials reported that as Sunday went on, Russia’s attack volume started to increase once more. In the meantime, Ukraine was charged by the Russian Ministry of Defense with violating the truce.
Although Kyiv accepted the 30-hour truce, Ukraine immediately reacted skeptically to Putin’s declaration. Since Russia’s unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, there have been no breaks in hostilities.
Putin’s reasons for declaring the temporary cessation of hostilities were questioned; this came shortly after the Trump administration vowed to discontinue peace talks in the absence of observable progress. In the past, Russia has turned down a US request for a 30-day ceasefire that Ukraine accepted.
Trump stated on Sunday that he “hopefully” reached a deal with Ukraine. What kind of agreement might be reached between the two warring nations was not specified by him.
The war is solely coming from Russia.
Putin’s ceasefire was proclaimed mere hours after the Russian military declared that it had driven Ukrainian forces from one of their last strongholds in Kursk, a territory in southern Russia.
According to Zelensky, since 10 a.m. local time on Sunday (3 a.m. ET), Ukraine’s military has noticed an upsurge in Russian shelling and drone use.

Fact, either Putin lacks complete command of his forces or the circumstances demonstrate that Russia is not genuinely committed in bringing the war to an end and is merely seeking positive publicity,” he stated.
“Russia is the sole cause of the war and the reason it has been prolonged,” this Easter demonstrated plainly. Although Russia has not yet reacted to this, we are prepared to proceed toward peace and a complete, unconditional, and equitable ceasefire that can endure for at least 30 days,” Zelensky subsequently stated.
Russia is allegedly using the ceasefire to build roads for heavy military equipment in the area, according to Ukraine’s 66th mechanized brigade, which is now stationed close to Lyman in the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk region. According to the brigade, Russian troops exploited the pause in firing on Sunday to clear a blown-up piece of equipment that had been obstructing a crucial river crossing since early April.
