Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed – A True Hero of Pakistan

Major Raja Aziz Bhatti is one of Pakistan’s greatest military heroes, remembered for his extraordinary bravery and selfless sacrifice during the Indo-Pak War of 1965. He remains a symbol of patriotism and courage for the people of Pakistan. Posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military honor, his story continues to inspire generations.

Early Life and Military Career

Raja Aziz Bhatti was born on August 6, 1928, in Hong Kong, where his father was serving in the British Army. His family belonged to the Rajput clan and hailed from the Ladian village in the Gujrat district of Punjab, Pakistan. After the independence of Pakistan in 1947, his family migrated to Pakistan and settled there permanently.

In 1948, Aziz Bhatti joined the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) at Kakul. He was an outstanding cadet who excelled in academics, discipline, and leadership. He graduated in 1950 and was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment. During his training, he was awarded the Sword of Honour and the Norman Gold Medal—two of the highest honors for a cadet at the PMA.

Major Aziz Bhatti was known for his commitment, intelligence, and sense of duty. He continued his military education and training, even attending a course in Canada. His devotion to the army and to his country was evident throughout his career.

Heroism in the 1965 War

The defining moment of Major Aziz Bhatti’s life came during the Indo-Pak War of 1965. India launched a full-scale attack on Lahore on September 6, 1965, aiming to cut off the city and capture strategic areas. Major Aziz Bhatti was commanding a company of the 17th Punjab Regiment in the Burki sector, near the BRB Canal, which was a critical point of defense for Lahore.

For six days and nights, Major Bhatti and his men defended the strategic position against repeated attacks by a much larger Indian force, including tanks and artillery. Despite being heavily outnumbered and under continuous fire, he led his troops from the front. His bravery and leadership played a crucial role in holding the enemy back.

He chose to be positioned at the forward-most post to better observe the enemy and direct artillery fire. When offered relief from his post due to exhaustion, he famously refused, saying, "Do not recall me. I want to die defending my post." His determination inspired the soldiers under his command and demonstrated his absolute commitment to the defense of his homeland.

On September 10, 1965, while directing artillery fire and repelling another enemy assault, Major Aziz Bhatti was struck by a shell from an Indian tank and embraced martyrdom. His death was a great loss, but his courage became a legend.

Legacy and Honors

For his unmatched bravery and devotion to duty, Major Raja Aziz Bhatti was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military award for valor. He became the first officer of the Pakistan Army to receive this honor after the creation of Pakistan.

His sacrifice is remembered every year on Defence Day (September 6) and his story is taught in schools and military academies across the country. His grave is located in Lahore, and various public places—roads, schools, and military facilities—have been named in his honor. A television drama based on his life, "Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed", further immortalized his story.

Conclusion

Major Aziz Bhatti’s life is a testament to the spirit of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. He stood his ground in the face of overwhelming odds and laid down his life so that others could live in a free and secure Pakistan. His legacy continues to inspire the armed forces and the people of Pakistan. He will always be remembered as a true national hero and a guardian of the nation’s honor.
