macOS Sonoma is set to launch today, and we are eagerly anticipating its arrival. There are 5 key features that have piqued our interest.
You will greatly appreciate macOS Sonoma.
After the release of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, it is now the turn of macOS Sonoma to roll out. The launch is scheduled for today, Tuesday, September 26. There is an extensive list of new features, including new wallpapers and screen savers, improvements to Safari, the ability to share passwords and passkeys with trusted contacts, and the inclusion of all the beloved features from iOS 17's Messages app in macOS.
However, there are five key features that significantly enhance the user experience, with three being nice to have and two being game changers.
Regarding the release date of macOS Sonoma, Apple has confirmed that eligible Mac users will receive the update today, Tuesday, September 26, 2023. To determine the specific time of the release, let's take a look at Apple's past history:
- United States: 10 a.m. PDT; 11 a.m. MDT; 12 noon CDT; 1 p.m. EDT
- Canada: 10 a.m. PDT, 1 p.m. EDT, 2 p.m. ADT
- United Kingdom: 6 p.m. BST
- Europe: 7 p.m. CEST, 8 p.m. MSK/EEST/TRT
- India: 10:30 p.m. IST
Now, let's delve into the five key features that enhance the macOS Sonoma experience. The first feature is Game Mode, which prioritizes CPU and GPU resources for games while reducing background task usage. Additionally, latency for audio through AirPods and wireless controllers is significantly reduced. Although the improvement in controller latency may not be as noticeable, the difference in audio latency is substantial.
Moreover, Apple is making advancements on the developer side as well. Efforts are being made to bring popular games like Resident Evil Village and Death Stranding natively to the Mac using Metal. To facilitate testing for developers, Apple has introduced the Game Porting Toolkit, which has yielded impressive results. Furthermore, Apple has essentially created a Windows emulator capable of running high-performance games such as Cyberpunk 2077 smoothly on macOS Sonoma.
The second key feature is Desktop Widgets, a simple yet effective implementation that enhances user productivity. By organizing desktop icons and utilizing Continuity, users can add widgets directly to their desktops without the need to install corresponding apps. Additionally, for Stage Manager users, widgets can fade into the background, enabling improved focus.
Lastly, AirPods Automatic Switching receives a significant boost in macOS Sonoma. Although this may seem like a minor enhancement, it often makes a substantial difference in user experience. Previously, users had to manually navigate Bluetooth settings and click on the AirPods multiple times to switch from their iPhones to their MacBooks. Sometimes, this transition would take up to 30 seconds. However, in macOS Sonoma, Automatic Switching has been considerably accelerated and has demonstrated increased reliability. Personally, I found that the transition no longer requires any manual intervention, and the switch takes a maximum of just five seconds.
4. Apple has made significant upgrades to the Notes app, enhancing its functionality and usefulness. As a regular user of the app on my Mac, I find it invaluable for quickly jotting down thoughts, creating shopping lists, and saving links for future reference. Two key features have particularly captured my admiration.
Firstly, you can now save PDF files directly into Notes and easily navigate through them, as you would with any standard PDF reader. Furthermore, Apple will soon introduce AutoFill for PDFs, allowing you to automatically populate document fields with your saved information.
Secondly, if, like me, you meticulously plan your travels across multiple documents, you'll appreciate the new ability to link to other notes within a single note in macOS Sonoma. This feature has proven massively beneficial in effortlessly switching between my packing list and the various locations I intend to visit. Its practicality extends beyond personal use and can certainly be advantageous in professional settings as well.
5. Apple's integration of video conferencing apps like Zoom into Sonoma has not only boosted productivity but also added an element of enjoyment to the experience. These innovative additions serve both practical and entertaining purposes.
In the realm of work, Presenter Overlay stands out as a remarkable feature. It intelligently positions your presentation content on the screen behind you, ensuring seamless delivery. Additionally, should you wish to showcase the same information in full-screen mode, your head can appear as a floating element over the shared screen, facilitating a captivating and immersive presentation.
Moreover, Sonoma provides the opportunity to create visually stimulating effect reactions using hand gestures. By simply making a gesture, such as a thumbs up, you can activate 3D augmented reality effects that appear behind you, like a dazzling display of fireworks. This delightful addition injects a touch of fun and excitement into your video meetings, making them more engaging and memorable.
