Tobacco is characterized by the presence of the alkaloid nicotine which is found in all parts of the plant except the seed. The production of Tobacco has been a staple in Florida’s history and foundation long before the Civil War. Quincy, Florida grew a great deal of what was known as “Speckled leaf tobacco”, a sun variety grown on hammock land. This tobacco was hauled by wagon to the gulf port of St. Marks and transshipped by sailboat, about one-third of the annual yield being exported.
