The American freelancing platform known as Upwork Inc., which was originally known as Elance-oDesk, has its headquarters in Santa Clara and San Francisco, both in the state of California.
At the time of the merger between Elance Inc. and oDesk Corp. in 2013, the firm was established under the name Elance-oDesk. Upwork was the new name given to the amalgamated firm once it was relaunched in 2015.
It was announced in March 2022 that Time magazine has included Upwork on its list of the TIME100 Most Influential Companies of 2022.
Beerud Sheth, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Srini Anumolu, a veteran of Wall Street, established Elance in 1998 in a two-bedroom apartment in Jersey City.
In December of 1999, the firm took 22 of its workers and moved them to Sunnyvale, which is situated in the Silicon Valley of California.
The first product that Elance ever offered was called the Elance Small Business Marketplace.
The company oDesk was established in 2003 by two friends, Odysseas Tsatalos and Stratis Karamanlakis, who wished to collaborate despite the fact that one of them was located in the United States of America and the other was located in Greece.
oDesk was first established as a staffing agency; however, it later evolved into an online marketplace that enabled registered users to locate, employ, and interact with remote workers.
In the year 2009, a hacker was successful in obtaining the personal information of over 1.3 million registered individuals. This information included names, addresses, passwords, and account information connected with email accounts.
On the 18th of December in 2013, Elance and oDesk made the announcement that they will be merging to become Elance-oDesk.
In 2015, the newly established business had its name changed to Upwork, which corresponded with an upgrading of the oDesk platform, which was also known by the same name. According to the newly rebranded Upwork, the Elance platform was also scheduled to be discontinued during the next several years.
Between the years 2009 and 2014, the firm received a spot on the Inc. 5000 list, and on October 3, 2018, it submitted an application for an initial public offering.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Upwork began banning operations for freelancers and customers in Russia and Belarus on March 7, 2022. This was done as a kind of censure.
Through this platform, people and businesses are able to connect with one another in order to do business. In order to find a freelancer to accomplish their work, clients submit a description of the task they need done as well as a price range that they are ready to pay.
It is possible for the customer to either publish the work for any freelancer who is interested in applying for it or invite certain freelancers to submit applications for their tasks.
Once the customer has decided who they want to perform the assignment, they employ that freelancer by delivering a contract that specifies the amount of compensation, the number of hours that will be worked, and the date by which the work must be finished.
In the year 2020, the corporation terminated the employment of 1.8 million independent contractors.Hayden Brown, the CEO of Upwork, said in a call with investors in 2019 that the company will be concentrating more on catering to the requirements of Fortune 500 firms as opposed to smaller businesses that are just looking for a short task with a single gig worker.
In addition, Brown said that there was a "skill gap" between the things that businesses were searching for on the Upwork platform and the things that they were receiving. Several of the freelancers that were eliminated were ranked lower on the site or were classified as having "less skilled" abilities.
