The Towers being built.

Work started on the twin towers in the Summer of 1966. There are a surprising amount of photos. There is an absolutely amazing site that is cataloging a bunch of photos from history check them out HERE. They are a non-profit with a passion of preserving the past so please go take a look at there amazing article. The buildings rose quickly taking only 5 years to be completely done. The North Tower became the tallest building in the world standing at a height of 1,254 feet (382.2 meters). Rising 110 story's into the New York sky.An impressive feat for the time. There are much taller buildings in the world today. The tallest being the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates soaring high at a height of 2,722 feet (829.8 meters).

The towers opened on April 4th, 1970. Two buildings with 110 stories that stood nearly a quarter mile in the sky. As of 2001, the WTC housed more than 430 businesses from 28 different countries—roughly 50,000 workers.

They became a tourist attraction for many years. In 1974, Philippe Petit walked in a tightrope between the two towers at 1,350 feet above the ground. Want to watch a video of him talking about his experience and that day in general? Click HERE! On April 18, 1976 a restaurant called Windows on The World opened it was located on the 106th and 107th floors of the North tower. People traveled from all over the world to visit. It provided breathtaking views of New York. It was a popular restaurant in 2000 it was the highest grossing in the United States. Want to read more on the restaurant click HERE. It was known as Vista International Hotel when it opened but later was bought by Marriot. The hotel was damaged in the 1993 bombing, but repaired and reopened. The hotel was connected to the North Tower via an underground entrance at concourse level, and a small pedestrian walkway that extended from the west promenade of the Marriott to the North Tower on plaza level. It was destroyed in the collapse of the South Tower on 9/11. Click HERE to learn more.

A substation is a a key part of an electrical grid, acting as a central hub for switching and transforming voltage levels to ensure efficient and reliable power delivery. It was a 47 story office building, used mainly by the Salomon Brothers. Salomon Brothers is a multinational bulge bracket investment bank. People called the 7 World Trade Center was referred to by the Salomon Brothers building. It was connected to the world trade center by a pedestrian bridge that went over Vesey street. 7 WTC before and after 9/11.

The 1993 Bombing of the World Trade Center is often overlooked due to the September 11, 2001 attacks but it killed six people including an unborn child. On February 26, 1993 right around noon a loud explosion rocked lower Manhattan. This left six people dead and more than a thousand injured some with serious injuries. The six victims of this horrible attack were John DiGiovanni, Robert Kirkpatrick, Stephen A. Knapp, William Macko, Wilfredo Mercado and Monica Rodriguez Smith, who was pregnant when she was killed. Their names are inscribed on the 9/11 memorial on on panel N-73, according to 9/11 memorial. A small band of terrorist slipped away in the carnage, as the FBI and its partners on the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force was setting up to investigate. They’d been tracking Islamic fundamentalists in the city for month, so they suspected terrorism. They would soon find proof of terrorism like a suspiciously obliterated vehicle identification number, leading to a rented van reported stolen. An Islamic fundamentalist named Mohammad Salameh had rented the vehicle. On March 4 the FBI Swat team arrested Mohammad Salameh. The FBI soon had three more suspects in custody (Nidal Ayyad, Mahmoud Abouhalima, and Ahmed Ajaj.) They also uncovered an apartment with were the bomb was built as well as dangerous chemicals. All four men were eventually tried and sentenced to life in prison. This bombing sent shockwaves through New York, as clean up was happening the FBI uncovered a second plot to bomb a series of New York landmarks simultaneously, including the U.N. building, the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, and the federal plaza where the New York FBI building is located. The mastermind of the bombing was still on the run. The FBI learned of his name weeks after the attack (Ramzi Yousef) he was planning more attacks, including simultaneous bombing of a dozen U.S. international flights. Yousef was captured in Pakistan in February 1995, returned to America, and convicted along with the van driver (Eyad Ismoil). A seventh plotter (Abdul Yasin) remains at large. The FBI later learned that Yousef's plot was much more disturbing. He wanted the bomb to topple one tower, with the collapsing debris knocking down the second. Which was a haunting foreshadow to the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Yousef’s uncle Khalid Sheikh Mohammed a member of the terrorist group al Qaeda would later carryout the 9/11 attacks. All of this information was found on the FBI history page.

In 1995, World Views,” an artists-in-residence program submitted a proposal to used some of the vacant office spaces a temporary artist studios. They were accepted and the studios were on the 91 and 92 floors on the North towers. Sounds like just another business moving in, but it was actually used to bring businesses back to the towers after the 1993 bombings as roughly 400 businesses left the World Trade complexes. Just six weeks before 9/11, Silverstein Properties Inc won the bid to lease the World Trade Towers. They obtained a 99-year lease encompassing 10.6 million square feet of office space, for $3.25 billion. (5.82 billion today). After the 9/11 attacks Silverstein Properties Inc played a key role in the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site.

World Trade Center Complex has had a complicated past. It took 24 years to rebuild after 9/11 and we still aren't completely finished. There are many people today who are still affected by it. Whether its from someone lost on that day, to being there helping while and after, or being impacted by the stories of everything that day. As we get closer to the 25 year anniversary I implore you to look over the stories, go to the WTC complex, and simply never forget what happened. Even though we rebuild we will never be the same.

Author's Note: I hope you were able to learn more about the World Trade Center's. I had never seen a complete history of the WTC and wanted to compile one that being said, if something is wrong please let me know. I have provided all my sources. Any that didn't have a hyperlink in the story will be provided below. I would be more than happy to update and edit as time goes on.
