SoundCloud has both free and paid memberships accessible on its platform, which can be accessed on mobile devices, desktop computers, and Xbox consoles. SoundCloud has transformed from a conventional internet streaming platform into a full-fledged entertainment organization.
On August 27, 2007, Swedish sound designer Alexander Ljung and Swedish electronic musician Eric Wahlforss founded SoundCloud in Berlin.
The website for SoundCloud was launched on October 17, 2008.Later that year, Kid Cudi, the rapper, uploaded the video for his song "Soundtrack 2 My Life." It was eventually updated on YouTube in 2012.
Originally, it was meant to help musicians work together by making it easier for them to share and talk about recordings.
However, it subsequently became a platform for releasing music and distributing it to others.Wired magazine reports that SoundCloud started to compete with Myspace as a venue for artists to share their music shortly after it was created.
Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures provided SoundCloud with €2.5 million in Series A investment in April 2009.SoundCloud reported that it has reached one million users in May 2010.
SoundCloud was rumored to have acquired $10 million in Series B investment from Union Square Ventures and Index Ventures in January 2011.
SoundCloud has five million registered users and funding from Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary's A-Grade Fund on June 15, 2011. On January 23, 2012, it stated that it had ten million registered users.
SoundCloud reported in May 2012 that it had 15 million users and that the number of users was rising by 1.5 million per month.In March 2014, Twitter announced that it will be working with SoundCloud to create its first integrated music app.
However, the concept was never able to proceed ahead since SoundCloud was unable to handle licensed music owing to a lack of appropriate agreements with music companies.
In July 2013, SoundCloud had 40 million registered users, and 20 million new users were signing up every month.In January 2014, SoundCloud said that it has begun discussions with major music firms to get licenses in order to solve the issue of unlicensed copyrighted content that often appeared on the site.
The news came after a round of investment in which $60 million was raised, culminating in a value of $700 million.
Media reports report that the discussions were started in order to prevent the same issues that Google had to deal with. Google had to manage a high volume of requests to take down videos on its YouTube video-sharing site.
In May 2015, it was reported that Twitter was thinking about buying SoundCloud for about $2 billion.
However, the media downplayed the possibility of a purchase, with one article saying that "the numbers didn't add up."With Bobby Owsinski speculating on the Forbes website in July that SoundCloud's continuous failure to clinch arrangements with the big music companies was the primary reason for the problem
On September 28, 2016, Spotify made an announcement that it was thinking about purchasing SoundCloud. On December 8, 2016, it was reported that Spotify had given up on its efforts to acquire anything.
