A Journey in Service

An Autobiography of Ibrahim Babangida

By Adah AdahsonPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

The eagerly anticipated autobiography of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), the former military president of Nigeria who presided from 1985 to 1993, is titled A Journey in Service. Babangida's personal and professional life, including his military career, leadership experiences, policy decisions, and the difficulties he had while leading Nigeria, are all covered in detail in the book, which was released on February 20, 2025.

Babangida's admission that the late Chief MKO Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election is among the book's most important findings. He explains why national security concerns led to the decision to cancel the election, calling it the most challenging choice of his career. This acknowledgement is important since the annulment, which caused protracted political instability and ultimately the 1999 transfer to civilian control, is still regarded as one of the most contentious political events in Nigerian history.

The Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) and other economic measures put in place during Babangida's administration are also examined in the book. SAP was first introduced in 1986 with the goal of restructuring Nigeria's economy by lowering government involvement, promoting privatisation, and drawing in foreign capital. However, these measures were among the most criticised parts of Babangida's rule since they caused widespread poverty, inflation, and unrest. In his memoir, he argues that Nigeria's economy was in severe need of restructuring at the time and advocates SAP as a necessary but challenging economic change.

The unsolved 1986 murder of journalist Dele Giwa is another significant subject discussed in A Journey in Service. Many believed that Nigeria's security services were involved in the parcel bombing that killed Giwa, the co-founder of Newswatch magazine. Babangida has been accused in connection with the crime over the years, and although the book mentions the topic, it offers no ground-breaking insights or a conclusive resolution to any unanswered concerns involving the murder.

In addition to politics and government, Babangida considers his own life story, from his upbringing in Niger State to his ascent through the Nigerian military. He talks about his experiences as a young officer during the 1967–1970 Nigerian Civil War and his involvement in several military takeovers up to his final ascension to power in 1985 through the overthrow of General Muhammadu Buhari. The book describes his power dynamics, alliances, and strategic choices that shaped his government.

Babangida's defence of his leadership decisions, particularly his transition plan intended to restore civilian authority in Nigeria, is one of the memoir's main themes. He discusses his decision to resign in 1993 and cede control to Chief Ernest Shonekan's interim administration. His narrative aims to dispel myths regarding his leadership style by presenting him as a practical leader who, in spite of challenging circumstances, operated in the nation's best interests.

There was a lot of interest in the book launch, which also functioned as a fundraiser for the IBB Presidential Library. Significant gifts were made by well-known businessmen including Abdulsamad Rabiu and Aliko Dangote; the total is said to have approached N17 billion. This indicates Babangida's enduring impact and the great interest in his legacy.

In his final chapters, Babangida offers guidance to upcoming presidents while reflecting on Nigeria's political evolution since he stepped down. He stresses the necessity for visionary leadership, national unity, and economic changes while acknowledging the difficulties the nation faces.

All things considered, A Journey in Service makes a substantial addition to the historical and political conversation in Nigeria. Although the memoir offers Babangida's own viewpoint on significant occasions, it has also generated discussions, with some detractors contending that it leaves out important details of several conflicts. However, the book is still a valuable tool for comprehending the intricacies of Babangida's rule and his influence on contemporary Nigeria.
